How much should an allowance be? Good question! Surprisingly, the right answer isn't dependent on age, but on financial responsibility.
At Allowance Academy we define an allowance as the amount of the household budget the kids are allowed to spend. The allowance they receive is money we would have spent on the kids anyway, we're just letting them decide how it should be spent.
Young kids with only a food budget are allowed to decide if they want to buy school lunch everyday or save their money for a treat at the movies or a cookie when they go shopping. The amount of the allowance depends on what the kids will spend money on.
