Good morning! Today I'm talking on the topic of allowance. I don't think I've talked about this before, so today I'm talking about why we do it, how we do it, and I'll explain our system.

Hi everyone! My name is Julie, and I'm a mama to FIVE! My kids are 12, 11, 9, 7, and 4. I post videos every Monday that are either mommy tips, favourites, homeschool curriculum reviews, grocery hauls, or some other kind of 'mommy' video! Wednesdays are always a full day of food. I also post large family vlogs on Fridays. Thank you for checking out my channel, and I hope you subscribe so you can keep up on my videos! I love to keep in contact with those who watch my videos to find out what's going on in your life, so please comment below. I always read your comments! :)

Right now we pay our 5 year old for his farm chores (it’s usually like 50c a day in the winter because he negotiated a raise since winters hard work 😅) and then because he collects eggs he gets a percentage of the money when we sell eggs as well. He already understands the value of money and he feels proud and values what he buys.

This was very interesting! We don’t do allowances primarily because, to me, household chores are just part of life and do not actually generate income, so I worry that paying my kids to do them sends a confusing message - but you are definitely right that learning to manage their own money is really important. Thanks for sharing this; it gave me some more to think about. 😊

Thanks for sharing. We don’t do allowance mainly because we were stretched so thin for such a long time. About a year ago we started dog sitting as our side hustle and I pay each of our kids $1/night/dog. They are LOVING their new income!!! It has taught them the value of the dollar though. Just today my 6 year old couldn’t choose between 2 Barbie sets at the store and was having a really rough time about it. As we were discussing the pros and cons of each set she sighed loudly and said “it’s just the money thing…” 😂😂😂 It was a great talking point for sure 😊

I think that is a good way to give your children allowance, and I think it is wonderful that you and Andrew compromise on who gets what money. That shows you are very compromising with each other. I pray you all had a great resurrection celebration!

I love that your kids buy their siblings presents for their bdays.
We actually do that for Xmas (they buy each other presents). It’s so cute what they decide to give.
I have three boys: the oldest is a major spender and will spend money as soon as he gets it, the middle is a major saver and my youngest is a giver (he’ll give money to his bros).

Hey Julie. We've been thinking about starting to give our kids allowance, so how fitting that you came out with this video. I think it's so important to teach kids the value of money. Parent allowance is a great idea too, we do something similar. I've always been so grateful that my husband and I are on the same page when it comes to finances. Thanks for sharing your allowance ideas. I always enjoy your content and your family. ❤️

Hey Julie, my parents gave me and my siblings allowance. I loved getting allowance as a kid and it helped me later on when I started working along with many other things that you mentioned. I know when I’m a parent I will be giving my children allowance because it will teach them responsibilities, the value of hard work and how it pays off, and it will give them some spending money. Another good reason to do allowance is to show children the value of hard work and how good it feels when it’s paid off, this will help them later on when they start working. I will definitely be checking this video out again when I have children and I start giving them allowance. ❤️🥰 I loved this video and I can’t wait for the next one. Me and my husband have our own spending money but we still make sure to pay all of our bills.

We do very similar with our kids too. It gives them an incentive and also teaches them the value of money and making sure you give the Good God His portion. He always blesses a cheerful giver.

We often try to find what they are looking for used if possible.

Thank you for this video. God has definitely laid on my heart and in my head to start allowance with our kiddos. My oldest is 9 soon 10. We never did it before. I understand not disclosing amounts; that can vary from family to family, how much kids are helping out etc...but I would love some starting ideas. ? Maybe their age amount per week or fortnight? Start the youngest around $2 a week older $5/week. I guess the point is to start ha.
My kids are also recently learning that chores have to be a good part of our homeschool day so I think a little allowance balances for that too.

We do the same about our own adult spending money.

I haven’t started giving my kids allowance yet as they’re still a little too young, but I heard about taxing the money before which I want to implement. So basically every child gets a certain amount of money and then we take back 1 or 2 dollars. Then every quarter the family comes together and decides what they should do with that money. Maybe one quarter it’s a family fun day, but the next quarter it’s to buy something for the house. Thought it was a cool idea to teach them about taxes and coming together to make family decisions.

Do you withdraw cash for the kids allowance? How about you and Andrews? I always find the cash hard and an extra step when someone wants to buy something online

I was very staunchly against allowance for a long time but one day I realized that their housework and responsibilities ARE thier jobs right now and it would be very hard for me to be expected to go to a job and not be paid for it, especially if it wasn't something I was pationate about.. and let's be honest there are only a few unicorn kids that are passionate about chores at home 😂
