How Did First Years Get Wands During Voldemort's Reign? Why Were They Sent to Hogwarts?

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’re discussing Voldemort’s reign in the second wizarding war, Hogwarts, Hogwarts FIRST YEAR STUDENTS, and wands.

Let’s dive in to it.

Voldemort’s regime during the second wizarding war really flipped the wizarding world on its axis. Where once there was peace, now there was heartbreak, separation and destruction. He had successfully taken over the ministry of magic, torn apart Diagon Alley, and EVEN managed to breach the walls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry- the world’s foremost magic school.

The school, which had previously been overseen by powerful wizard (and good guy, maybe?) Albus Dumbledore, was no longer under his protection after his untimely death. Dumbledore’s vacancy left a big hole in Hogwarts, and without his protection, it didn’t take long for Voldemort and the Death Eaters to waltz right in.

But the Death Eaters taking over Hogwarts certainly didn’t mean that classes would stop. Oh no. Class was still very much in session, just with a very…different set of rules and approach.

With a double-agent Snape taking the Headmaster helm, most of the school staff remained in their usual postings. However, a Death Eater takeover did of course mean that a few new faces were introduced to the faculty, like Alecto and Amycus Carrow- a pure blood brother/sister combo that took over Muggle Studies and Defence Against the Dark Arts (respectively).

Ok Silas, we get it, class was still in session. What’s your point?

Well, school in session meant that new faces were still popping up at Hogwarts. That’s right, just like Harry Potter in his first year- new, bright young witches and wizards were walking through the doors of Hogwarts for the very first time.

But, can you even begin to imagine how much different this experience would have been for these NEW first years? Harry was met with wonder, magic and excitement. These new first years must have been met with darkness, terror and uncertainty- entirely unsure of where the school stood admist Voldemort’s wizarding world takeover.

Why were students even sent?

In the "Sorcerers Stone", Hagrid plainly said that there were other wand makers, but Ollivanders was the best.

I don't think new mugglebornes would just not be invited to attend Hogwarts during Voldemort's reign. Maybe that's why a whole lot of us didn't get their Hogwarts letter.

I wouldn't mind seeing all of the wand makers of the Harry Potter world. Thank you for the content!

There are plenty of good questions/topics mentioned in this video, although, the addition of Muggleborns attending Hogwarts could have stayed out of it. The reason being that, as you mentioned at the beginning of the video, Muggleborns were NOT allowed to attend Hogwarts, whether they were 11 years old, or 16/17. This is why Dean Thomas, thinking he was a Muggleborn since he didn't know his father (who was a wizard), was on the run during Voldemort's reign. No Muggleborn would have received a letter, so their perception of Hogwarts would be non-existent. The real question, in regards to 11-year-old Muggleborns who did not receive their notice/invitation to Hogwarts during this period, would be - How did Hogwarts adjust to all the Muggleborns who had missed a year of school, especially the 11-now-12+ year olds?
Did 12-year-old Muggleborns start with 11-year-olds as 1st years?
Were the classes elongated so that students who fell behind could catch up to their years?
etc..
As for the rest of the students who WERE allowed to attend Hogwarts during this dark period, and who did not pass during the battle/war, I'm sure their parents were much more trusting of them going back to Hogwarts once hundreds of people witnessed the fall of Voldemort, were aware of the rise of McGonagall, and the Ministry of Magic gave a 360 turn-around.

I'd love to hear about other wandmakers. He only ever hear about Ollivander and Gregorovitch

I never thought about this. The “they will make do with other makers” kind of passed it off but as most people used Olivanders it an interesting topic.

A history of wandmakers video would be interesting.

As a muggle parent, if I got a letter saying my kid was magical and they were required to be sent away I would DEFINITELY believe it and send them away to the "school." Oh wait, no, I love my kids and the letter would go in the bin or I would contact the muggle authorities to let them know my child is getting threatening letters.

Let's be frank, muggles would only accept magic was real if a witch or wizard showed up and proved it to them. I suspect the muggle borns just stopped going to Hogwarts.

A first-year point of view account of this time in Hogwarts history would be an incredible book to read

Muggle borns typically had someone had deliver the acceptance letter and explained the world of magic. Under Voldemort that would either not happen or he would have someone watch the book of admission and have the muggle borns rounded up for Azkaban so any threat of magic out of his control would be eliminated.

Learning about other Wand Makers in the Wizarding world would be cool!

Why would Voldemort allow letters to go out to muggle borns? Yes they still had magical power but without training they would not be able to effectively wield it and so would be no threat to Voldemort and his future plans. More importantly sending those letters would be acknowledging that they have legitimate claim to magic which of course they would never do. The better question is what about those muggle borns that were already at the school.

If the Diagon Alley at Universal Studios is to be believed, there are other wand shops; Ollivander's is just considered the best.

I have always been under the impression that when they say things like, "His name's been down even since he was born, " it means quite literally. The first years names get magically written into a book when they first show signs of magic. Muggle borns couldn't just "not go" because their names were already known. Attend or flee were the only options.

This could explain why Draco went after Harry in Deathly Hallows to get his wand back instead of buying a replacement. Every other wand shop that wasn't Ollivander's sold sub quality wands.

It seems that everyone forgot about Olivanders Partner, Who ran the Olivangers wand shop branch in Hogs Mead. Even JK seems to have forgotten about him. Why couldnt he just close down the branch shop and take over the main shop in Diagon Ally? At least that way the shop would stay open.

Video idea for you to do:

What additional effects do spells have that are not seen in the movies? For instance, what else can the patronus charm do besides ward off dementors?

Parents: Sure?

Kid gets tortured

Kid: I hate my parents for sending me here.
