🖌️ 3 Cons of Digital Inking (Yes, even from a digital artist!) 🎨

Alright, so I’m a digital guy through and through when it comes to inking—but let’s be real, not everyone’s feeling the love for it these days. With all the AI art drama and digital media taking some heat, I figured I’d share 3 cons I’ve personally dealt with in the digital inking world:

1️⃣ Screen Burnout
Picture this: I spend all day staring at a screen for work, then when I want to chill and do some fun art for myself? Yup, more screen time. It's like, “Hey, wanna relax? How about... another six hours of tablet?” 😅 It's a lot.

2️⃣ Digital Wallet Drain
Let's be honest, going digital can get pricey. You want an iPad? A tablet? Even a computer that can handle Photoshop without crying? More $$$. Meanwhile, traditional folks out here thriving with a pen and paper. 💀

3️⃣ No Feels, Bro
This one hits hard—digital tools just can’t compete with that real tactile feel of traditional media. No matter how much texture or how fancy the brush pack is (I’m looking at you, LP brushes!), it’s not quite the same as putting ink to paper. I get why people miss that vibe.

It's interesting to me that you cited the cost as a con because for me the cost factor was actually a positive for digital art over traditional.

I found that the cost of expendable traditional media in the long run was more expensive than digital media, especially if you were going for the same result. Sure, you can just sketch with a pencil and paper, but let's be honest, if you want to do something like painting or watercolors that gets expensive over time, whereas with digital tools it's a one-time purchase and you're done. And we all know that while the expensive fancy digitizer tablets are useful, the tools don't make the artist. You can teach yourself to draw amazingly on an old $30 screenless wacom tablet and freeware like Krita.

Despite the convenience of working digitally, there is always a feeling of peace when working traditionally, as it aspired us to be artists:)

I went from traditional to doing digital and I love it, but sometimes I have the urge to go traditional to keep the feeling of it alive or to have a break from the screens once in awhile. Even sketching traditionally in a sketchbook when I can to ensure I still have both skills up to par

Digital art is less expensive in the long run and more convenient. I'm looking into buying myself a drawing tablet (you're aware, right, that iPad is not the only tablet of the market for digital drawing? a whole market of screenless and Android tablets are out there, and you can also run an apk on android, which is a huge help) and the convenience of it is way more comfortable for me than traditional art. Talked to another artist and they said a similar thing.

I draw a lot of digital because I have all the colors I could want at my finger tips as well as brushes and inspiration.
But there’s nothing like the feeling of a newly sharpened pencil on a good sketch book.

As a beginner, I started with digital. I felt like it gave me more freedom to mess up and try different techniques. I could use different brushes that would emulate oil, watercolor… and tough they’re not the same as the real thing, I at least got a feel for those. Now I’ve switched to traditional . Because I quit doing commission work, so no need for digital and I don’t like looking at the screen for so long. Also after years of doing commissions digitally, I feel like as soon as I am in front of a screen, my mind immediately switches to working mode, instead of just enjoying myself creatively. Wich is another big reason why I prefer traditional now

Digital is way cheaper than traditional.
Pen and paper is far from all that's needed. You can draw with sticks in mud but you can't do anything with that. That's why I dropped art in high-school. Dropping hundreds for one project was unsustainable.

Tbh, any tablet is gonna be more expensive than a piece of paper and pencil, but you have to consider that even the cheapest one has much more functionality. You can also get a pretty decent blackboard tablet for 50$ and less, that would last you for years, while painting supplies can cost far, FAR more and would constantly require spending more and more money for each project.

The actual price culprit is the PC/laptop that you need for drawing tablet, but you didnt include it in your video, mostly referring to IPads and regular tablets. You dont need them.

Traditional is alright until you start wanting to do painting, oils, and now you got sht load of money to spend on canvas, maybe even better apartment with better lighting, and paints, and on and on it goes. I rather be digital. Saves me money, saves me time and I can easily share with other artists, save as PSD for them to add elements and changes too.

Tbh, i don’t care about ai anymore. Like you wanna steal my drawing to make a good drawing? Hey, go for it. I just gonna see it as a huge compliment that a robot thinks it’s considered good. And people that lie about using ai.. just start being honest. You like ai? Ok, enjoy but just be honest about it. I am not even gonna hate on people that use ai anymore. It’s a waste of time, energy. Just enjoy life as much as you can. That’s how I view it.

Interesting arguments here… however would feel that oil paint costs double on the long run, hard to clean the brushes after and may pollute the environment… traditional arts also are hard to transform into other objects like we can in digital arts… I wouldn’y compare Ai « art » to other medium in terms of technical aspects… myself… as a digital artist myself… would argue that art in whatever medium requires a lot of thinking and planning and efforts to do.. so in my perspective I wouldn’t use that to fully « relax » but rather a method of expression.
