We have a lessons and trail business. We have a 250 pound limit, no matter height, which upsets many people. When they schedule, we ask so we can pair horses to riders. They don’t know horses and we do. We also know people … lie and occasionally when they arrive it’s obvious. I turn them down. These people want an experience and aren’t riders. I understand that. I protect our horses.

While it's not appropriate for a random person to tell you something like that, I can see where they are coming from. They just want to make sure that the 20% rule applies

Same, I own a 3yo roan Appaloosa quarter horse. And I, am very very tall, but I am very light weight. People tell me all the time that I am too big for my horse when I’m not, I have done the math I am in fact under the 20% rule. (My horse is 14.5-15.5 hh i am not entirely sure.)

The thing is is when you’re packing goats and horses and mules you put half of their weight including tack but apparently when you’re riding you can only be 20% which makes no sense

It's not rude, it's that they're worried about the horse. Not your feelings

People on the internet always think they know better than you. Adult men have been riding Icelandic horses since the viking era and before, and they're pony size

Mot goi.g to contradict anyone, but i think it really matters if you're a good rider or not (actually trained and balanced, not think you're good).
People that pull the saddle over when getting on or lean o er in their corners or sit off center, shouldnt go over the 20% rule, and height doesn't matter.
Look at this excellent rider, hes never an oz out of place
Imho😊

I remember my trainer once told me that. “you’re a big dude”

I get this as well. I’m taller but only about 182lbs. My horse is 14.3 quarter/draftX and built like a brick sh*t house. He has no problem carrying my saddle and I. As Jim has mentioned he’s built like a rocket donkey.

You'll have that when you're good at what you do. Envious people can't help but make some kind of negative comment. If your size is the best thing they can come up with, then you're doing okay.

You're tall. Big is connected to weight /20% You do not appear heavy.

I hate people talking shit about the size it’s an animals that we have used to pull trains carts pounds of things up mountains and as long as you aren’t 300 pounds getting on a Shetland no issues

The way I see it, horses with more muscle mass and strength, can handle more weight, just like an Olympic weightlifter, can handle more weight than the average person, they can do so because they have the proper strength and training 🙂

What is safe for a horse can't be determined by looking. Also, you ride primarily Quarter Horses, which are much more stocky and can safely carry more weight than say, a Thoroughbred.
