Raspberry Pi as AdBlock Server : Pi-Hole

Pi-hole is a Linux network-level advertisement and internet tracker blocking application which acts as a DNS sinkhole, intended for use on a private network. It is designed for use on embedded devices with network capability, such as the Raspberry Pi, but can be used on other machines running Linux and cloud implementations.

Pi-hole has the ability to block traditional website adverts as well as adverts in unconventional places, such as smart TVs and mobile operating system adverts.

Requirements

1. RASPBIAN STRETCH WITH DESKTOP Image download Link.

2. Software to write image to SD card

3. 8 GB SD Card [minimum]

4. SD Card Formatter

5. Putty

Install Pi Hole on Raspberry Pi 3 Model B

1. sudo apt-get update

2. sudo apt-get upgrade

Note down the ip addresss and login password.

Excellent tutorial. I imagine I could be selective as to which device uses the DNS? For example, instead of pointing my router to the DNS I can choose a manual DNS on the client computers connected on the network. Therefore I can keep all the ads, but on my phone I could use the Pi Hole IP (DNS) to block traffic. Is that correct?
