I watched this video & another one from Jonny many many times. I've used a sponge for a knockdown finishes on patches and it worked fairly well for me. Today I had the equivalent of about three sheets of drywall to put the knockdown texture on. It was an absolute mess, I was covered head to feet. Lots of variables - thickness of mud, different roller types, & different roller nap sizes.
1) Forgot to sand walls as Jonny mentioned, which made it difficult, in some areas I had adhesion problems of mud sluffing off when using the knockdown knife.
2) Tried spaghetti roller & just went back to a regular roller.
3) I had to use a sponge for the wall corners & where the wall met the ceiling or trim.
4) Tried my 12" drywall knife to apply mud to wall but it was just too difficult to get a consistent layer so I went back to the roller.
5) I used 3/8" nap & if I did this again I'd use a 1/2".
6) Most difficult part is getting a consistent layer of mud on the wall. By the end I found I had to load the roller with mud & just lay down one vertical strip about 2.5ft high, then I'd reroll this small area to get consistent coverage. Then I'd re-load the roller & put down another 2.5ft strip - over & over till the wall was covered.
7) After the wall was covered I'd go back over everything to get the stippled finish. As Jonny mentioned, try to go the same direction, either straight down or from bottom up in fairly fast motion and lift off near the end.
So for knockdown patches the roller works really nice for me, its enjoyable & gives an acceptable finish. Next time if I had an area larger than two sheets of drywall I think I'd either buy or rent a hopper to spray the mud on the wall.

Thanks for this video! I've got a quick question: some videos recommend priming the drywall before adding texture. What are your thoughts on this?

Great info, I wish you got a tighter shot at the end, it's hard to see on my phone.

Couldn’t see anything other than just a white wall! Thanks for the tutorial though

Jonny great video! One question. When you were loading the roller you said it was a 3/4”, but when you put it to the wall you called it a 3/8”. What size roller did you use?

I tried to do a texture with roller and all purpose mud on non brand-drywall, experienced a problem of drywall’s paper peeling off when rolling the mud over, did a coat of all purpose mud ski thinking this might help in supporting the paper so it does not peel, tried again but same problem, how you guys recommend this with such issues, what I am missing here if any?

I like the smoothing technique, that really makes it look sharp! I missed that step with my office drywall project I mentioned in your last video. How long was the entire process, including the primer and painting for that room?

Good video Jonny, well explained. Quick question, can I use 20 min mud? or what's preferred?

You failed to show us the texture pattern, all I saw was a white wall

Can't see anything. Light must cost a lot of money where you live.
