Finally — Should Apple buy Netflix?

Netflix is in trouble. Not for hiking prices more often than Ticketmaster does a Taylor Swift show. And not for canceling half your favorite series after a single season. Not because companies like Disney, Warners, Paramount, et. al have started competing services, and have either taken away high-retention content like Friends or are providing alternate, even cheaper places to get it. Not even for coming up with — and having to instantly walk back — the dumbest period password-sharing prevention period scheme period ever period.

But for the exact same reason they’ve always been in trouble. The same reason that causes every rando analyst hungry for a clickbait headline to pop up like Van Gogh melting clockwork every few months to say Apple should buy them. Should buy Netflix.

Well, ok, technically the opposite reason

Dalí did the “melting clocks”. Not Van Gogh.

Netflix should focus on Content rather than patrolling users for sharing their account....there's a screen limit, yet still they wanna micro manage logins which is ridiculous for the subscription price!

Apple has a fair number of problems to deal with in 2023 after struggling with engineering and logistics issues in 2022. Buying Netflix would be a major distraction and require a lot of management attention in a year where they need to execute on iPhones and Macs. I'd much rather see a 3nm transition than the addition of Netflix.

netflix does cancel every show after 1 season, its infuriating.

The biggest reason Apple shouldn’t buy Netflix is that it would draw negative governmental attention worried about BS anti-trust allegations. That would put the rest of Apples healthy business at risk. Hard pass on this acquisition.

Netflix doesn't need saving. They're anual revenue and profit are respectively $30B and $14B and it didn't tank, despite heavy competition in the past 3 years. They need to stay focused on content.

I really like Apple TV+ and have no regrets paying for it. If Netflix would allow Apple to put their service in the TV app, I would be less likely to regret paying for, or eventually canceling, the service. Netflix just isn’t that compelling to me anymore. Just a hassle.

You look cold today. 😁 Thanks for still putting out videos for us!

Van Gogh never melted any clocks, that was Salvador Dali.

I think it would be an awesome move if Samsung were to buy Spotify and Netflix.
This way Samsung would have their own Music streaming and Video services.
Just like Apple has their own Apple Music and apple tv plus.

My biggest problem with Netflix is the fact that they acquire IPs that has success written all over them only to squander the opportunity.

wouldn't it be Dali melting clockwork? :P ... yes that's what I got out of this discussion haha

You’re on the money. Netflix doesn’t realize the only reason most customers haven’t cancelled already is that they AREN’T thinking about their subscription. Most households are in debt and credit cards are full. We are in a trade/hot war, debt crisis, liquidity crisis and a new great depression. The moment customers think about cost cutting, Netflix is first to go.

Richard Plepler built prestige HBO, and already works for Apple TV+ indirectly.

I suspect Apple has already considered shortcuts like buying Netflix or HBO Max, and came to the conclusion they need to build the service the hard and slow way to get the control over the business model they want.

Neither Netflix or HBO Max have a business model that will work long-term. Spending $18b per year on original content and charging $10/mo was a zero-interest-rate phenomenon.

When I was working at Darwin Networks in 2000, when they caught a bunch of Jefferson Commons students logged on with the same user and password, they would kick them all offline. When they called in saying they lost their connection, we would tell them. You aren't supposed to be sharing your passwords

If Netflix wants a masterclass in shredding community goodwill, all they need to do is study Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro.

No. Apple would get hit with Antitrust if they purchased Netflix.

Can someone explain to me how HBO Max has such an extremely terrible user experience on pretty much every platform, that barely loads videos sometimes? Given their generally high end content I do not for the life of me understand how they created such bad apps that barely provide a better experience than having to go back in time and watching it on VHS...
