Wichita Lineman

I am a lineman for the county
And I drive the main road
Searchin' in the sun for another overload
I hear you singin' in the wire
I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line

I know I need a small vacation
But it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south
Won't ever stand the strain
And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line

And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line

And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time. One of the most beautiful lines ever written.

For some reason the DJ on KGB 101.1 in San Diego played this song every weekday morning at 6:00am when I got up to get ready for school. I would wake up to this song for my entire year of 9th grade in 1969. It was stuck in my head and my PE teacher heard me singing it alone in the boy's shower after gym class. As I turned to head to my locker, coach was leaning against the stub wall around the showers, handed me a towel, and said I should audition for the school glee club. I told him that I was already a band geek and I didn't need any more credits for music or arts.

I had the opportunity to work with freight railroad linemen when I had a
job as a communications tech in the 1980's. Prior to today's high speed
wireless data networks via microwave towers and satellite dishes,
multiple copper wire cables strung via telephone poles next to the
railroad tracks were the main way railroad companies communicated by
phones, intercoms, and sent signals to control the signal lights, gates,
and track switch controls. The lines were very vulnerable to harsh
weather conditions that often brought lines down or created overloads,
shorts, opens and noise in the lines. The linemen installed and
maintained those lines and systems, so they were extremely important in
those days. The linemen had to work in every kind of weather conditions
at all hours of the day or night on call duty, so it was very difficult
to maintain a romantic relationship with the opposite sex. They were
always on the open road and very seldom home at any predictable hours.
If they had a good relationship, it was very special. It was a very hard
job and often lonely at times as they traveled often alone on the open
highways and back country roads to and from their assigned work
locations thinking about their sweetie at home or kids. Many times, it
was the only thing that motivated them and gave them energy when
overworked and very tired. But they still had a very important job to
do. All lineman no matter where they work, or if they work for a
communications company, power company, or railroad company, can relate
to this song. God bless Glenn Campbell for bringing this and other
beautiful songs to the world for our enjoyment.

...'and I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time'. One of my all-time favorite song lyrics. I grew up listening to Glen Campbell. My mother adored him. One of the most underrated singer/songwriters in the music industry. Thank you for the memories :)

I found my own way to learn English back in the sixties, Glen has perfect diction, easy to understand and you crave for more, making it easy to "navigate" on your quest to fluency, well? it is my opinion,
