How does it help to "solve" for a variable (x) in terms of another variable (y)? Isn't the goal to get the variables to equal some known quantity? At the end of your equations, both variables are still unknown.

I think the reason why some people don't get your explanation, is that you needed to tell them at the end that you have to multiply one of the variable with the value we found. For example:

3 (5 - 4/3 y) + 4y =15

I am in an MAT World Language Education program in FL and while I have Aced all of my classes and passed all of the Subject Area Tests (Spanish, French, Italian) the Math General Knowledge Test is kicking my butt.
