'US wants to turn Ukraine into the Afghan war that the Soviets had to face' • FRANCE 24 English

US President Joe Biden will meet the leader of newest NATO member Finland on Thursday, after G7 powers vowed to back Ukraine for as long as it takes to defeat Russia. Biden will meet with Sauli Niinisto, the president of the Nordic country, which shares a 1,300 kilometres (800-mile) border with Russia and which ended its historic military non-alignment following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The trip comes after NATO leaders dashed Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky's hopes for a clear timeline to join the military alliance, saying they would offer an invite only when "conditions are met". G7 nations later offered Ukraine a package of long-term security commitments and vowed to stand with Kyiv for "as long as it takes" to defeat Russia. For in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective on the West's, and particularly NATO's, long-term commitment to Ukraine, FRANCE 24's Mark Owen is joined by strategist and expert on international relations Dr. Sean McFate, a Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council.

_Of course_ Russia should be weakened. No sense allowing it to pay no price. As for Sean McFate's take, he is welcome to his limited opinion.

This war is already much worse than the Soviet Afghan war. The Russians have lost more people and FAR more equipment in this war.

Zelensky did not expect Ukraine to join NATO while they are at war. He has specifically said that he realises it is impossible.

Nonsense. Russia has arranged for itself a second Afghanistan. Afghanistan once destroyed the USSR.

That is what Americans did in Afghanistan, to slowly increase the size and nature of weapons and let the Soviets bleed economically and militarily.

Russia invaded Afghanistan, as history will remind you,
US was forced to go into Afghanistan becuase of the attack on 9/11.

The spring offensive did not go because Zelensky did not receie what he asked in time a year ago. To little to late, dear West experts. So don't you go on saying "frankly failing". Your governments had they wanted to do better - they could have. And the spring offensive would have been well timed. Quite an "expert" being interviewed here - looks like he's been following also just after breaking winter sleep :)

This man lost his credibility when he said Zelensky wanted into NATO. Zelensky wanted an invitation or timeline. Not an expert!
