I don't know if the app is the only way to adjust the car for the driver, but I know that the phone app does way more than telling the car who drives it. So it's very useful anyway.

But I do wonder how they deal with the case of two drivers registered on that car when they both go to the car. Does the car know who is in the driver's seat or does it show the driver profile selector on the screen? That's an interesting case.

You know, keyless cars have been recognizing individual users to personally adjust seats, mirrors, steering, climate etc for about 25 years. They distinguish users by their fobs. It was totally possible to do with chip keys before that and I’m sure some did.
