_________________________________________________________________________
Are you tired of all the confusion in the Catholic Church? So was I! For this reason, I decided to intensely study the Catholic Magisterium in order to discern between what people say about the Catholic Church vs. what it actually says and teaches. If you are a confused Catholic, or are discerning becoming a Catholic, Reason & Theology offers you an in-depth examination of the situation in the Catholic Church that will help make sense of the confusion.

It seems crazy that Protestants try to argue that he does. Sola scriptura is a reformation invention that doesn't exist in the early church

Augustine was a Catholic bishop. He taught Sacred Tradition AND Sacred Scripture, the two pillars of our faith. The fact that protestants twist his writings to think up fanciful and nonsensical arguments is intellectually dishonest of them, they have a long history of doing this starting with the Deformation.

I would not believe in the Gospel if the authority of the Catholic Church did not move me to do so.” — Saint Augustine

Did St. Augustine of Hippo *confirm* Martin Luther's doctrine of sola scriptura..?

or was Martin Luther looking for *justification* by quoting cherry picking st. aguatinus?

August as the earliest? That is so interesting. Irenaeus' thoughts on the relationship between the Church, the Gospel, and the Scriptures were key to me remaining Protestant. Cheers, Jay

It is odd to hear Augustine cited as a proponent of Sola Scriptura. In the second chapter of the third book of his work, 'On Christian Doctrine', St Augustine addresses the issue of what to do when a Scriptural passage is ambiguous. He says the following: "But when proper words make Scripture ambiguous, we must see in the first place that there is nothing wrong in our punctuation or pronunciation. Accordingly, if, when attention is given to the passage, it shall appear to be uncertain in what way it ought to be punctuated or pronounced, let the reader consult the RULE OF FAITH which he has gathered from the plainer passages of Scripture, AND FROM THE AUTHORITY OF THE CHURCH..." In this passage, St. Augustine explicitly acknowledges the rule of faith as being derived not just from the Scriptures, but from the authority of the Church.

“I would not believe in these infallible Gospels if it were not for the completely fallible authority of the Catholic Church, that I agree with on baptism, works, perpetual virginity of Mary and purgatory, and which these infallible gospels clearly don’t teach.” -Augustine, the Head Pastor of Hippo.

Same thing with V2 documents. If catholics find ambiguity in some teachings of V2, let them abide by the Church interpretation of It and accept the Church interpretation even if the Church interpretation of V2 is/seems wrong to their own understanding because our understanding is also fallible unless we are already perfectly holy. Rad trads are no different from protestants. Protestants interpret the Bible by their own and reject the Catholic Church interpretation of It while rad trads interpret V2 teachings and other church teachings by their own and reject the Church interpretation because for them, they are better and more guided by the Holy Spirit than the church leaders who received teaching authority from God. This behavior of protestants and rad trads is pride chicken.

How about the shallow implication that unless it was mentioned, it wasn't believed.

This is one question I have posed to many Catholics and no answer seem to be forthcoming. Can you prove to me that the gospel preached by the apostle included these new Catholic dogmas? Did the apostle John, the one who was looking after the mother of our lord teach us about her being mother of the church having mediatrix role? Did anyone talk about her sinlessness and surely John outlived blessed Mary and he could have then spoken about her assumption! Tell you what, I have been a Christian for over 40 years and I find the gospel that was taught by all the apostle to be sufficient. Or should I assume, the apostolic gospel was inadequate hence the necessity for the Catholic magisterium to keep coming up new necessary things century by century!
