Thanks for your videos was a guide for kids (and their parents) with sensory issues.

I have a question about 6 year old SPD boy (no developmental issues, nothing in spectrum, regular kid, intelligent) who has hand-flapping (and also leg flaps and some mouth stimmings when he is sitting, but nothing in the spectrum) .

He do the hand-flapping, generally when he is exited or too happy. When we call his name or touch a little bit, he easily get out of the hand-flapping.
We have some concerns because, for example while walking near the road, he may feel exited about something he during the 5-10 seconds he is hand-flapping and walking at the same time, we are afraid that he can walk to the road (and concerns about car crash) . And also on the long terms, we do not want him to be excluded from friend groups in primary/secondary school because of his special stimming behavior.

He has been receiving OT (generally focused on motor skills, he has low muscle tone, now he can ride bicycle with side wheels and can use 3 wheel scooter, just not strong and active like his peers) for the last 3 years and we progress a lot.

What my questions as parents are:
-- When do hand-flapping goes away?

-- If not? When do the SPD kid learns to control their selves?
-- We try to replace this with other behaviors, but he is not willing to. He say _(wisely for a 6 yo)_ that he has been created this way, that is what he is.
-- I would be glad, if you can also point out your experience with stimming issues. Some additional info related with *age periods* as well (of course, I believe it will be different from kid-to-kid but just wanted to get some general info) .

I do not see this hand flapping in children with only SPD, just one more kid that I see during OT sessions. So what is the background of hand-flapping exactly? I do search some scientific studies, but hand-flapping seems to be not clearly related with anything actually.

fatihs.
