Threats to Student Expression in the Shadow of Covid-19

Students play an important role as human rights defenders, but face great risk. Please spread the word and join us in defending student activists.

Many authorities have exploited the shadow of the ongoing pandemic, to tighten their grip on freedom of speech and democracy. Scholars at Risk have recently published their Free to Think-report.

From September 2019 through to August this year, the organisation registered 341 attacks on higher education. This number includes killings, imprisonment, prosecution, loss of position, travel restrictions and more. Of the 341 incidents, 118 relate to student expression.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

In this video SAIH president Sunniva Folgen Høiskar highlights some of the report findings and provide examples from partner organisations of SAIH. She is joined by María Paula Rozo from Colombian student union ACEU.
