Choosing the right electives can be an easy task but you're probably doing it wrong. Today's video, I talk about how to choose electives from the perspective of you 10 years from now.

I mentor students, graduates, and those still "struggling" to find their way and establish a rewarding career they are passionate about and a life they are proud of. while establishing a productive life-work balance!

Ask me a question:

I'm back from vacation, my mind is well-rested and a video post is long overdue! Today, I look at how to choose the best high-school electives. The topic was brought you by my little sister as she;s wondering what electives to take that will best help her attain her college/university goals. I remember picking the best electives for me back in high school and typically that meant choosing courses that I knew I was good at or interested me. Looking back, I don't think that was the best strategy.

In today's video, I talk about:

- The electives I took when I was in high school
- Electives that are available today
- The best electives to take, which are the ones that complement your skillset
- How your high school electives can actually be a huge help for you in your adult years

Although I didn't get to talk about it this in my video, I'd add physical education onto your list. As someone who was overweight and an asthmatic, I hated PE but in the long term, physical education is essential in teaching you how to use weights, how to do exercises properly and how to play common sports (like volleyball, basketball, etc).

Today's academic society places too much attention on our minds and they are neglecting our bodies. The two are connected and one is not more important than the other - they are both important, so don't ignore your body. Be active and be aware of motion and movement.

I actually explore this topic in more detail in my other video:
"Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Body."

I really want to do this video production class because whenever I’m in the room everyone in the class feels like my family and I want to be able to enjoy that throughout high school but I don’t wanna do it as a career I think of it more as a hobby that really interests me to do throughout high school because it sounds super fun. The actual career I want to go into is anything in the medical field and there is a program at my school that offers that which I know I would enjoy so so much but the thing is it does require a lot of work and if I don’t enjoy it I would have given up my chance to be part of my video production class. My video production class is really important to me but it’s not what I’m planning to do as a career while the program is what I want to be in the future. I don’t want to give up my video production class for a program that I might not even like. This program might help me get into a really good college and will give me a huge head start at whichever college I choose to go to. I don’t know how to pick which one I would rather do, they both are such cool opportunities and I just can’t pick which one. Any advice?

I picked visual arts and dance! i was stuck between dance and chorus because my chorus teacher had so much faith in me and i picked dance over chorus. I picked dance because i love dancing and my mom said it would be nice for me to learn something new. But i love chorus and i dont know if i made the right choice

I chose personal finance because I thought it would be good for when I get older, and because there werent a lot of options that were easy or things that I liked. Anyone know if personal finance is hard.

there are so many choices and i only have one i can pick. i’m worried that art electives will be too easy since ive taken so many before, but i really love art and there’s no other class but beginner or AP which is overboard. i don’t know what else i should pick because i know i don’t have a lot of room for electives in the future as well :(

I was not allowed to attend my highschool graduation because I failed an elective class. This class was not necessary for me to get my highschool diploma. Why are highschool students prevented from attending there graduation for the grade of a unnecessary class? 🤔

Unfortunately my school is odd and doesn't let me choose my electives. I just get what's put on my schedule. They don't even ask me what I want. It's random.

I live in SC. And SC is known for deplorable education. Smh.

What should I do? I want to be a doctor. In my freshman year I got ace classes (which are advanced classes) and I choose Spanish 1. Should I change anything for 10th grade? (The councilors came to my class in 8th grade and asked which ones I wanted and I chose Spanish) (I am a couple of months from 9th grade)

Thank you, this will help a lot
