OMEGA just released the perfect Speedmaster - Here's everything you need to know

The New "First OMEGA in Space" OMEGA Speedmaster might be the most perfect Speedy ever released. Slimmed down to 39.7mm rather than the traditional 42mm, a blue-grey dial, Alpha hands, flat link bracelet. This is the OMEGA of my dreams! The First OMEGA in Space was the referece CK2998 worn by Wally Schirra. It was his personal OMEGA that he chose to wear into space, 3 years before the brand was selected by NASA to be their official watch. From there, the FOIS was released in 2012 as an homage to the CK2998 and then discontinued in late 2020. But now it is BACK BABYYYYY. And even better than before. OMEGA has made some really meaningful updates to this, and I think this is a slam dunk. This is my new favourite OMEGA Speedmaster.

Britt, one thing you didn't mention (that I think is important) is that the sapphire has been engineered to have the same curvature as the original hesalite. I think that's awesome. Strong, scratch-resistant sapphire, but made to look like the original. I think it's brilliant. I hope that bring that to the Speedmaster Professional too.

I wore one for an hour or so yesterday (Thanks to the excellent team in the Omega Covent Garden boutique) and it's pretty much as you describe - except it's even better in real life than on the small screen. It's definitely not a "poor man's 321"!

The domed crystal is superb, and I'm glad that it has no anti-reflective treatment on the outside as it's bound to knock against something sooner or later which would mark an anti-reflective crystal. The metal bracelet has a micro adjustment and really looks like it belongs with the watch. I obviously didn't have the bracelet adjusted to my wrist but even so I'm 100% certain it will be very comfortable. The vintage colour of the lume shows up really nicely against the very dark blue/grey dial and it adds warmth.

I saw one in person. Some big takeaways:
1) the crystal is flat at the top. It does not look like hesalite, sorry. It mimics it but isn’t it.
2) the CASE is 39.7mm. The dial is the same size. The reason is because they removed the crown guard. Otherwise, it’d be the same as a Moonwatch.
3) the lume is more orange than brown compared to the 57.
4) the dial is shiny. It’s a preference thing.
5) the bracelet comes with an adjustable clasp (1 micro adjustment)
6) the large minute and hour hands + the small second hand are polished steel, somewhat like the 57. The small hour and minute hands are white. It’s a preference thing but supposedly alludes to another reference.
7) boutiques will not sell you one until they receive replenishment. This is so everyone gets a chance to look at it in person.
8) it’s a standard model . . . for now.
9) white dial is $8100. Moonwatch in sapphire is $8000. This one is $7900.
10) Omega NATO straps are technically 19.5 mm so could fit the watch. Just be careful of bent springs.
TLDR: just buy it.

The first version cost £4050 when last sold and the new one £7100. It does look great, but that’s a hefty increase for the new movement.

As somebody who has two speedmasters. I don't feel the obsession of having to hate on the speedy editions. The most important thing is how attractive is the watch. This one happens to be very attractive. Well designed. Good specs. It's just that simple.

BP, T4YC: It just happened. Two minutes ago. I suddenly reached "Speedmaster saturation point"! (Now known as SSP) It's strange, but on that very busy dial, there isn't a single way of measuring how much Speedmaster bombardment you've been exposed to. Now that's ironic!

I’m normally all about the Pro case and handset but the soleil dial in this (for tens of thousands less than a vintage soleil dial) puts this straight onto my Speedy wishlist.

Everyone seems to love this new speedy. I still like the regular speed mass professional more. But that’s probably just a personal thing as I’m just too big to wear a watch that’s under 40 mm.

I tried it on today, it looks amazing in person, even better than on the official photos! And it wears pretty nicely, the normal speedi always was way too big for my rather small wrist!
