2011 Mazda RX-8 review by The Straight Pipes. The Mazda RX-8 is pumping out 232hp and 159 lb-ft tq from a 1.3L Rotary Engine. At $2,000 - 10,000 CAD, Would you take it over a Mazda RX-7?

Revs to 9k, hot cup holders, a nonexistent trunk, “freestyle” doors and a ton of fun to drive? Sounds like a super car to me 😂

I sold cars for a few years....took one in on trade and drove it for the weekend....it's not the fastest, but man is it fun to drive!

No! They're thirsty and torqueless and drink oil and you need to rebuild them every two weeks!

I NEED THESE TO STAY CHEAP UNTIL I HAVE ROOM FOR ONE. DON'T LET THE SECRET OUT.

The sun visors with the holes in are actually secretly genius. They still dim the sun through the holes but you can still see traffic lights through the holes which is what they were designed for.

They're so great I own two. Everyone thinks they're so unreliable and they sell for cheap because of it. It's a win win for me.

Engineers: Bro you can't chew engine seals like that!

Rotary: ha ha Apex seal go nom nom.

I miss my R3. I could take a circular on-ramp at 75mph without losing traction. The only car I've ever regretted selling 😢

There something about driving a rotary powered car, it feels so wrong to redline daily but it just feels so right.
everyday i have two paths to take to head to work, i always choose the backroads to head to work.
i just let my Rx7 rip at 8k rpms and man it's a whole lot of fun driving backroads in an Rx7.

How to get the rotary to last a reasonable mileage:
-Install a sohn adapter so you get a clean idemitsu rotary premix or other 2-stroke oil injected instead of the engine oil

-Switch to 20W50 (don't do it before installing the sohn or your OMP lines will get clogged)

-Check the oil level often, like at least every 2 fuelings and keep the level near the top, dont let ot get near the bottom

-Do oil changes often

-Run B44K before some oil changes

-Especially on the older engine version that injects less oil, premix idemitsu rotary or other 2-stroke oil every time you fuel up. Keep in mind that this will lower octane rating of the petrol so instead of RON95 you probably want to run RON98 or RON100. Added benefit is that the more expensive fuel usually has some cleaning additives

-Don't beat up the engine while it's cold, DO go up to the limiter often once it's hot

-Avoid trips not long enough to get the engine hot. Be aware that if you have to move the car and shut it off immediately, chances are your engine will get flooded. Ideally you never shut it off cold, if you have to then shut it off after keeping the engine on 3.5-4k rpm for 10-15s and turn it off without releasing the gas pedal

People say it's a great daily driver, but if you do drive it daily it probably won't last long, and who wants a manual daily driver that burns 15l/100? (My average consumption for spirited country roads, if that's what its called in english, like togue runs etc, is 16l/100 after slamming it, running 235/35/19 and 255/30/19 with some negative camber, -3 degrees on the rear, forgot the front, and without going over 140kmph because over that I'd be risking getting my license suspended). I think it's a great weekend car, especially for first time RWD buyers since it's cheap, doesn't have too much power, the handling is great and very forgiving and the traction control is great. Just buy some old honda accord for 500$ with automatic gearbox to go to work and longer highway routes.

i wish you guys would show the engine under the hood more. lots of talk about the engine, but i don't remember seeing the engine once. (it's not pretty under there, but it made me notice that we don't see under the hoods too often in these lovely reviews.)

I love this car! My friend had one of these and she loved it. When she had her son she kept it because car seats could fit and the rear doors made it easy to live with. Hers had 110k miles before she finally traded in for an SUV, she never had a problem just followed the recommended maintenance.

Power steering connectors are situated almost directly beneath the coolant tank overflow pipe. When the engine gets hot, the drips from this pipe short the power steering. To solve this, rotate the pipe towards the nose of the car. This prevents the drips contacting the connector. Simple fix.

Had a 2004 for many years. Highlights: sewing machine engine; great gearbox; super quick electric steering; sweaty back seats; see-through visors. Mazda solved 2 issues forever. 1) analouge tach with big digital speedo - porsche says thanks, 2) the ac vents - they are perfect. Weird little car that I loved very much. Shitty gas mileage, burn oil by design and the engines grenade around 100k, oh and the synchros are not up to years of high rev shifts and they start to fail around 75k miles.

Oh man.. so happy you guys tested the RX8! I have one..and even though..i had to rebuilt the engine at 100 k kilometer..failed side seal spring..i'm even more in love with it..it's so intoxicating..simple and direct..just pure fun..keep up the amazing work guys!

It's too bad the early RX8s kinda killed their reputation, by the end of the generation, they were a lot more reliable... avoid the 2004-2006 cars. Unfortunately they never really fixed the inherent problems that come with owning a rotary, like how the engine will flood if not properly warmed up.

It's bittersweet to see the rotary go, but they never could quite work out the kinks. They came mighty close, and it does make you wonder if they could have figured it out with a just few more years. That said, it's hard to see Mazda trying to bring back the rotary when fuel and emission standards are the way they are now. Close, but no cigar.

You missed the aux and compartment in the centre arm rest which slides back and then tilts open on side hinge. The car is great if looked after! Had mine 9 years now and also track it.
