in my opinion, the 50:1 mix is for emissions... and it's so lean you can easily not have enough oil. Working in a fleet shop and having 25 guys use power equipment, I suggested we all go to a 40:1 mix... and never looked back. That was almost 25 years ago!

You just told the problem. NOT the mix.
The dirt getting pass filter. If it’s getting pass the filter once that means it’s happens more than once. Probably several times.
NOT properly blowing out or cleaning filter area and filter will ruin a motor, especially older ones.
Poor maintenance. Not the mix

This is so dumb. Why would Stihl not making the oil be a BAD thing?! Why would you think a CHAINSAW company would do a good job making oil?! That’s like not using DeWalt batteries anymore because you found out that the cells in them are not made by Dewalt, but rather contracted by Panasonic or Sony, two of the largest and best BATTERY manufacturers in the world.

Reading other comments, it sounds like Castrol makes the oil for Stihl. I have a feeling Castrol knows a little more about making oil than Stihl. This shows that Stihl went to a pro for their oil.

Finally, Stihl has every incentive in the world to make sure the oil with their name on it works in their saws.

Back in the days of street legal big displacement two strokes, from 250-750, especially Kawasaki triples, to singles. The best oil to use was Golden Spectro synthetic for oil injection or premixed. Or racers used castor bean oil, that created very little smoke and smelled like French Fries cooking. But I’m not sure of any changes lately, but the biggest NONO, was to use outboard motor oil! That was designed for a raw water cooled engine with unlimited supply of cool water to keep temps under control, unlike air cooled engines in vehicles, granted the two strokes in chain saws and mowers, while air cooled with cooling fins designed to dissipate heat, also had a built in cooling fan and air shrouds that help blow cooling airflow over an through the cooling fins. That would still run hotter than outboards.

What does saw dust getting by the filter have anything to do with the oil ratio!!!

I was always told that outboard 2 cycle oil is for water cooled and does not have the proper make up for hotter running air cooled. Also, what about the JASO and LEG-D ratings?

I have owned Stihl equipment for over 25 years and always used Stihl or Husqvarna 2 strke 50 to 1 oil but never synthetic !
0 engine related problems with chainsaws weedeaters
Always use ethanol free gas and mix a little heavy on the oil

What was the vid about? No really. Was the oil used, the owner was Spanish speaking or was it the dust getting past the filter.

One word. Amsoil. Best stuff on the market. Plug fouling is never and protection is outstanding. Been using it on my Stihl since the ‘90s still starts like it did when new.

I’ve been running Pennzoil marine two stroke “yellow bottle” for 25 years. Mostly 40-1 or in older saws 25-1 mixed with 91 non ethanol fuel. knock on wood never blew one up or burned one up yet.

Pennzoil 2 stroke oil for air cooled engines is what works great in my saws. The Pennzoil 2 stroke oil is also for use in 2 stroke aviation engines.

Klotz is the best oil that I have found!

Remember to good old days when you just used 30 weight and there were only 3 different oils 10 weight trans hydraulic power steering 30 weight motor oil hydraulic oil 2-cycle mix manual trans oil. And 80/90 gear lube for the diff

Castor oil still makes their oil correct?

I run quick silver synthetic at 40:1 in my Husqvarnas for 20+ years. Most blown up saws are caused by running lean. Adjust the carb a little rich so you don't rev the piss out of it and it will last.

I run all echo red armor oil in all my two stroke equipment. Some of that stuff has been commercially used for five years still on all the original components. And runs great.

So how does a saw oil mix, prevent air filters from not passing saw dusts? Im still running my 361 that i bought in 2009ish, cutting just shy 20 cords a year. Ive used their orange and silver bottles. I only mix off a certified measured pump . Then cut the fuel off just shyhalf of a tenth.
