How to calculate percentage

The formula for percentage is a number of parts of something over the total number of something, and take that result and multiply by 100, and to finish it off, we add this symbol after the number. As this symbol represents percentage.

As an example, if you created something, say your own energy drink, and manufactured 40 bottles of it. Then the total number of your something is the 40 bottles. And let’s say that you sell 17 bottles, so the number of parts sold is 17. To find the percentage sold, we put the number of parts, over the total number, so 17 over 40.

To calculate the percentage sold, we divide the numerator, the top number by the denominator, the bottom number, so, we divide 17 by 40. And doing so we get .425. Next we multiply .425 by 100, which gives us 42.5, then add in the percentage symbol, and the final answer is 42.5 percent sold.

The word percent actually means per 100 and it provides a way to compare things. For instance, let’s say that you hire 3 of your friends to sell your energy drink. You give friend A 35 bottles, friend B 45 bottles and friend C 25 bottles to try to sell.

A couple of days later, friend A has sold 20 bottles, friend B has sold 32 bottles and friend C has sold 16 bottles. You can use percentages to evaluate who is the better salesperson, 20 parts sold over 35 total parts for friend A, which using the formula results in 57% sold. 32 parts sold over 45 total parts for friend B, which results in 71.1 percent sold and 16 parts sold over 25 total parts for friend C, which results in 64 percent sold. So, based on the percentages, friend B is your best salesperson, followed by friend C and then friend A.

And percentage can in some situations be greater than 100%. For instance let’s say your sales crew sold a total of 420 bottles over a one month period. The next month they step their game up and sell a total of 546 bottles.

We would say they sold 120% of what they did the previous month. The reason we would say this is because we could put the first month’s sales in the denominator and the 2nd month’s sales in the numerator and dividing out we get 1.2. If we want to look at this as a percentage, we multiply by 100, which is 120, and add in the percentage symbol.

This is often used in businesses for bonuses for employees. For instance you could tell friend B, you want them to sell 200 bottles in a month, if they sell 110% you will give them a $10 bonus, 120% gets a $30 bonus and 150% gets you a $100 bonus.

Q. in Last example, why did you put numerator on top and denominator below?

how do we do 17/40 in the first place??

The number after deviding the numerator by the denominator is multiplied by 100 right? Not 100%? Cuz I'm getting a different answer when i add the " %" sign.

0.425×100%= 0.425
vs
0.425×100= 42.5

It's just multiplied by 100 right? 🤔😨😨😧

Calcute and tell 205/470
And find how much percentage it is???

This is incorrect. Your formula is saying times it by 100% but 100% is equal to 1.0. The formula should be parts/whole x 100 = %.
