Knee Bursitis
The knee bursa is a small, fluid filled sac located between the front of the patella (knee cap) and the overlying skin. The bursa allows the knee cap to slide freely underneath the skin as we bend and straighten the knee. This is an inflamed bursa over the top of the knee cap. When the bursa becomes inflamed, it is called bursitis, which causes pain, swelling, tenderness and a lump in the area on the top of the knee cap. It may be difficult to kneel down and put the knee the floor due to the tenderness and swelling. Types of knee bursitis include suprapatellar, prepatellar (most common), and infrapatellar. Knee bursitis can be caused by trauma such as a direct injury or a fall into the knee which damages the bursa with the development of sudden large swelling. Knee bursitis can also be caused by occupational kneeling. Bursitis is chronic and develops slowly as seen in carpet layers, tilers, and wrestlers. Infection can cause knee bursitis as well. Inspect the bursa for any breaks in the skin leading to infection. Red, hot, painful, and swollen bursa is a sign of possible infection. Wrestlers may have abrasions of the knee, and this can lead to knee bursitis that may be infected. Inflammation of the bursa can also cause knee bursitis. Treatment of knee bursitis includes anti-inflammatory medications, ice therapy, aspiration, or surgery. Do aspiration if infection is suspected or confirmed. Aspirate first before you give antibiotics and send the fluid for culture and crystals. Surgery is debridement and excision of the bursa may be needed. Protective covering should be placed around the knee while avoiding activities that aggravate the condition.

Got this back in September of 2021. Twisted my knee at work and it didnt hurt that bad immediately after so I finished the day. I tried to get up the stairs to help my mom with groceries when I got home and that is when it started to hurt like nothing I have ever experienced before. They said it was prepatellar bursitis and a left knee sprain. I was out of work for a month and had to wear a brace when I went to school. Thank god I have no lasting issues from it and today in August 2022 I have no complications and the knee is perfectly healthy. They did a prelim x ray at the ready med my mom took me to where I had practically had to hop on my right leg because any pressure I put on my injured left knee sent the most searing pain I have ever experienced rocketing up my leg. I went to physical therapy and the nurse was superb. They had me do a ton of exercises and it gradually improved over the next few weeks. I could walk normally on it after 3-4 weeks and even though it still hurt, the rest of the pain was gone by the start of November.

Literally that exact day when I went to ready med they did the x ray and the doctor said it looked healthy from that, but that I would have to get an MRI because there was so much fluid that it covered all of my knee cartilage and bone and he couldn’t really tell. My MRI came up clean (thank god no meniscus or ACL tear), they said I just sprained it.

I've had this before from moving a dresser down a flight of stairs. Prop it up and don't put pressure on it. Take Ibuprofen to take swelling down. It kinda feels like there is liquid in your knee. It will go away

This was thoroughly explained. How do they diagnose though? Through xrays or mri?

Thankyou so much dr. My daughter has this injury since so so long, she did ice therapy it reduced but still little left, which has become too irritating for her to get her on knees.

I know I have bursitis of the knee. It feels like liquid as explained but it doesn't hurt.. My wife sprayed benadryl on it thinking it was a bite lol funny thing is it actually went down a bit but days later I started squeezing it and it came back much larger. What should I do?

Do it occurs just below the knee also, or swelling below the knee is something else?

Can this happen with runners or from leg work in the gym?

Bursitis is no joke ppl I've been dealing with it for over 12yrs but only about 8-10 months in-between 2½ yrs! But when it comes back boy is it a bear to deal with! Ibuprofen (Advil) is normally my go-to for relief but sometimes it just doesn't want to behave! I heard about a laser surgery that is very effective that I have yet to look into & wonder if anyone has had it or something else to permanently fix this painful agonizing misfortune! Lots of basketball, pulling heavy items up major stairs & warehouse work has wreaked havoc on my left knee! As I'm getting older 52 I really don't want to deal with this anymore!😖💉🥴
