whenever i select the rectangle tool and make a mask, it just shows the lines of the mask and doesn't delete the part outside of the mask. what do i do?

I just opened AE for the first time.. Thank you. But After cropping I wanted to mask from the top down but after creating my mask and adding key frames when I move play head and add key frame NO ANIMATION!

you’re not really cropping, you’re masking, which gets in the way when you need to use motion tile

This video doesn't show how to properly crop the video. I think its just adding mask on it. I can't expand it or rotobrush tool on it, nothing. when I try to do rotobrush on it, it expands to the whole video. That means its not properly cropped.
