Currently, Discover offers a fully online checking and savings account that gives you 1% cashback on up to $3,000 in purchases each month, pays you 0.4% which isn't crazy but is pretty good compared to other banking platforms currently, and best of all this platform is completely free meaning no monthly fees, no insufficient funds fees, no minimum deposit requirements or anything like that. Discover also offers a fully online savings account, money market account options, CDs, and even retirement savings accounts.
Varo currently offers both checking and savings account options with a much more modern looking app and modern features like the ability to get paid up to two days early, instantly send money to friends and family through the app, and the ability to not only withdraw cash at over 55,000 free to use Alpoint ATM's but the ability to deposit cash at certain retail locations through the green dot reload system. With their savings account, you’re first going to earn 0.2% but if you get at least $1000 each month and you must keep your daily account balance between zero and $5000 you'll earn 3%!
This is more of a hybrid account so you're not necessarily going to have that separate checking and savings account option but with this hybrid checking account you have no account fees, no overdraft fees, no transfer fees, access to their network of 19,000 ATMs, $1,000,000 in FDIC insurance which is four times what your average bank will offer, plus the ability to pay bills, easily send into posit checks, and instantly transfer money in and out of your investment portfolio if that is a tool that you decide to take advantage of.
Current has all of those modern features like the ability to get paid early, cash back on purchases at 14,000 participating merchants, savings pods, spending insite tools, and of course the fact that it is all completely free. Now to clarify, they do have a premium checking account option for just a few dollars a month but a majority of the features do come with a free account so you can always try it out upgrade down the road if you really like it. As I said, I have reviewed the Current teen account as well, and actually, the reason why it is so high on this list it's because as part of that teen account, you actually have the ability to have your entire family on the same page with your finances.
Not only do they have the SoFi money account for your banking but they also have SoFi invest, SoFi barrow, SoFi Relay which is their free budgeting platform, the new SoFi credit card, and a ton of other integrations that allow you to track all of your finances under one platform. SoFi money is completely free, gives you access to 55,000 free to use ATM's, the ability to get paid up to two days early, currently will pay you a 0.25%, give you cashback bonuses, free cell phone protection, real-time spending alerts, savings goals, savings vaults, roundup tools, and $1.5 million in FDIC insurance.
