What will 2022's F1 cars actually look like? We finally saw Formula 1 unveil a full-sized version of its 2022 concept at Silverstone, but we all know that the teams will do everything they can do to get the most from the regulations. Autosport's Technical Editor Jake Boxall-Legge looks at how F1's own concept has varied, how F1 teams will change the design, and what happened in 2012 when a new ruleset produced the painful stepped nose F1 cars.

1:14 "couldn't quite disguise their apathy"
I dunno. Kimi looks like he's having a blast.

Because teams are clever and will want to work everything as much as possible.

calling it now: there's gonna be some sort of loophole that will result in very, very ugly cars next season

I am curious about what the likes of Adrian Newey can do with this

Rule changes always result in the same outcome. One teams gets it right and the rest are sour grapes.

Well let’s just hope the f1 2022 cars will have better liveries

Kimi looked both totally uninterested and also very confused as to why he was in his racing suit while not in a car

0:19 "but with the Sprint race taking top billing, the 2022 mockup was quickly forgotten"

And then the Sprint race was quickly forgotten when Max and Lewis got to Copse on lap 1 of the race proper.

Tip for new F1 fans: upon any announcement of rules change or new stuff, be always prepared for some disappointment

Can't wait for some team to work hard and innovate, and get it banned by FIA

I love how the 2022 car looks, even if it won't look exactly like that

Remember that the teams will always try to find the shape that makes them go faster and that also makes the cars behind them go slower ;)

This presenter, Jake, has improved dramatically. Cheers! Your improvement has been noticed. Great job!
He used to sound like he was bored and didn't want to be there doing the videos. Now he's got more energy and has begun using vocal inflection a bit whereas before it was always monotone.
I watched the entire thing and not once did I start checking to see how much longer there was. Definite improvement by Autosport.

"why 2022 cars will look like the reveal, but with minor adjustments"

I always get excited when there's a big rule change for how the cars will look. Having a bit of variety in what the cars look like is a good thing - for example, I liked the Ferrari duck nose, and don't think I could tell the cars apart if they were painted the same this season after convergence... But some cars are just ugly, and its even worse when everyone implements an objectively ugly solution! I have high hopes, but serious worries about those over-wheel flaps..

Sympathy for my man. Great energy in this video despite sweating with the heat. Is the camera light hot too 😂. I’m excited for the benefits of closer racing. i’m sure we will see more surprising results

1:16 ahahha all the expressions and Kimi is just there, with the EXACT same look he ALWAYS has...

I have been following F1 since the 94 season. I have never really had a problem with the aesthetics of the cars, well until some teams added the regulation dongs, even I had to consider those pretty horrendous.

I just love seeing what the designers come up with and how they sidestep regulations on their design. I feel the restrictive nature of the rules has really bred ingenuity in engineers.

I think we are going to see some 2 platform front wings next year. One platform to direct airflow into the underbody since we are losing the bargeboards, and one platform that acts as a main downforce fixture so that they can make wing changes to adjust front downforce without affecting the airflow to the underbody.
