Understanding Food Labels: What To Focus On – Dr. Berg

In this video, Dr. Berg talks about the most important things when reading labels. This relates to something called Nutritional Facts. The first thing you want to look at is the INGREDIENTS. The ingredient given firsts tell you what makes up the product mostly. Secondly look at the sugar grams, then the serving size, and then multiply these two factors to get the whole picture.

The next thing is total carbohydrates and minus the fiber to get the net carbs. You want to keep your carbs between 20-50 grams per day. Then you want to make sure to avoid GMO ingredients like soy, corn, and canola. Unless it says organic, it going to be GMO.

Do another one where you talk about alcohol sugars and how to factor that in. That was a new one for me and it stumps some people who are doing keto.

I like to look at the serving size and compare it to the total sugars, so in this case the serving size is 29g and the sugars is 15g, so sugars make up around 50% of what you are eating.

Thank you, you are the one who taught me how to read labels and I ended up not buying 99.9% of all the food on the shelves. I hope people will start waking up because apparently, no one is willing to do that.

We don't have high fructose corn syrup in the UK as far as I'm aware. (No trans fats either, this was banned in UK produced food long ago.) When I lived in the US I was shocked at the amount of these and artificial colours etc in the food.

I'm glad I live in Europe and I don't have to do all the calculations with cups, teaspoons, servings and what not. All the nutritional info is given per 100 grams, so you take the weight of the product and you have an easy calculation.

Useful info, also some times fine print of label is too fine to read even for normal eyesight, I bought an enlarging glass just for this purpose, sometimes I take a pic of label at the store & zoom it to read before purchasing.
Anything with a number for e.g. E 11 205 indicates preservatives .
When list of ingredients is too long, it’s
not a good thing .
