Great advice, and not just for beginners. Even experienced watch collectors need to be reminded from time to time. Impulsively buying watches can be an uphill struggle on a snowy hill.

ouuuu we all make rookie mistakes and I loved hearing some of yours, you gorgeous German goddess! My rookie mistake was treating watch collecting like a sprint and not a marathon. I just got so hooked, so quickly! And I just wanted to buy soooo many watches all at once! *face palm*. I am just an enthusiastic person!! hahah. I'm so glad you're back Jenni!

8. There is no true grail watch. Once you obtain a "grail" watch, there always will be another one to aspire to.

my first 15 years of collecting was all quartz sports watches. My last 10 years has go decidedly more upscale. Thank goodness I made most of my mistakes on the cheapies! I learned a long time ago to buy the seller first.

Yay! Jenni’s back! Nomos is a hard watch to resist! I love the Ludwig and because of my small wrists, I bought the 33 and later purchased a horween shell-cordovan remborde strap with the winged clasp. Love that watch! It keeps perfect time and that beautiful alpha caliber is really a sight to behold. Winding it every morning isn’t a chore, either. I actually look forward to it.

That Apple Watch reminds me of an ankle monitor when you go on probation. It’s like the government didn’t even have to make you wear it the people just do it themselves 😂

Some youtubers watch video reviews are produced so well that I find myself running to the AD to see the actual watch in person, and that's where my dilemma begins. Lol

Good advice. I talk myself into and out of buying a new watch every week. What a rush😅
I’m done spending big on a watch, there are so many fantastic micro brands out there. Think of all the fun. Thanks Jenni.

That AD was awesome giving the option to sending you the box when you get home! When coming back they don’t know you bought it outside the country.

Great job. In the 90’s I learned about eBay from an article in a Tech mag - the author was buying watches and covered many of these topics: scams, overbidding, buyer’s remorse, addiction. One needs to be very careful.

Finding the right seller is such a good advise. When I was selling one of my seiko’s, it was at least a year and a couple of month that I had to deal with BS offers till I found a buyer that truly appreciated it and sold it at a more that reasonable price

Good advice. I am also a strong believer in not buying watches on credit.

Good advice Jenni. I would add buying too many watches too fast when you first start out. If you have a 12 slot watch box, it doesn't mean it is a race to fill it. It is a mistake I have made personally.

I don't completely agree with the Private Seller vs Dealers. Yes, that may be true that if you're completely new to watches the second might be safer, however I found the "pro" grey market dealers very often try to make the watch look brand new by refinishing the watch and "professionally" servicing it. That many times leads to lesser quality finish than factory finish, overpolished rounded edges, dust under the crystal, marks on the hands etc. (yes, I have experience with that). If you don't care about that stuff and only want something shiny with ROLEX on the dial that's fine, but I personally would not have a watch refinished by anyone other than the manufacturer and I rather have a watch with slight scuffs from a private seller than a "cleaned up" one from one of the professional dealers. I would only get one from them if it's brand new and unworn.

Hmm, I made your mistake number 1. I bought my Tag Heuer Link Chronograph (the Jason Bourne one) from EBay. 3 years old at half the price of new. Alarm bells right? So I actually drove 14 to Germany and back (wow, interesting trying to speak German again after a couple of years as the seller only spoke German). But they (a couple) were real watch freaks and the watch was immaculate! Everything was there, and I was lucky because it was the holiday time. And indeed, my watchmaker was very impressed with how good it was. But yes, I was really lucky. I do still have it (bought it in 2006) and still love it…

Good points.
I'n my oppinion private offers are totally overrated.
I feel like 95% of the watsches are trash or unworth related to their (wet dream) prices of the ownet.
I get their thoughts: "I buy an expensive watch, but hey...after wearing and flexing I will sell for allmost same price."
There so many rocked down watches, full of scratches and flaws but thf prices are only 10% or never more than 20% less than originals. Comon...before buying and risiking a damaged movement, I pay the full price.
The average 20% off which is mentioned is only if the watch is as good as new condition.
But the most didn't understood.
That's why many ads are staying for months till they are deleted without selling.
