Ukrainian forces test new demining drones in Kharkiv using AI to map mines

This unmanned system is designed to detect mines and unexploded ordnance remotely. The drone can detect metal and plastic mines and shells not only on the surface but also underground, says Yevhen Poliachenko, a representative of the manufacturer.

Along with Yevhen Poliachenko, three other #Ukrainian manufacturers are demonstrating their developments to the emergency engineers. These drones are currently tested for use in mined areas, says Kateryna Drozd, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Economy.

According to her, 20,000 hectares of land were cleared of mines in the Kharkiv region over the past year, with more than a million and a half hectares remaining potentially dangerous.

The drones' cameras scan the mined area in different spectrums, and artificial intelligence draws up a map of it. This technology is new to the sappers of the State Emergency Service of the Kharkiv region, according to its representative Ihor Ovcharuk.
