Russia using controversial butterfly mines in Ukraine, says MOD

Russian forces in Ukraine are scattering highly controversial anti-personnel mines in parts of the Donbas region, the Ministry of Defence says.

The so-called 'butterfly mines' were widely used by Soviet forces in Afghanistan where they maimed large numbers of children who mistook them for toys.

Russian units in the Donbas are deploying them along their defensive lines, particularly around Donetsk and Kramatorsk, the MOD added.

Parrot mines have an incremental fuze, which means that repeated small pressures on the fat wing could set it off just as much as one 5lb pressure. However, you can safely pick them up by the thin wing, or sweep them with a long-handled broom. You then pile them up and set fire to them, because the plastic cases and liquid explosives burn readily.
The colour of the mine is supposed to match the terrain to make them hard to spot. (Temperate, desert or beaches, or snow.) We RAF bomb disposal teams practiced with dummy versions all the time back in Cold War days…

I feel so sad for anyone who picked one of those up, especially the children who had no idea what they were. 😥💔

Toe poppers, designed to maime which requires an average of four soldiers to remove the casualty from the battlefield.

Hmm this video is one of the most baffling I have seen, the title is very misleading. I’m not saying that Russia is not using these mines in operations and I am sure they are to an extent, but all of these clips in the video are from DPR/LPR sources when they were cleaning out the mines a week or two ago, I remember watching the videos personally, usually they were 1-2 minutes long showing the amount of mines dropped, mine clearing tanks and other means were used to clear them, there was also a video of a soldier walking through donestk warning people of the dangers and to pay more attention to the roads etc because people may not notice them, they were being marked with chalk circles or objects placed around them so it would make them as noticeable as possible. I find it extremely unlikely that Russia would drop mines over its own allied territory, especially donetsk seeing as its one of the most importantly held cities by the militias

'set and forget' ... these indiscriminate killing devices should not be anywhere near civilians. so cowardly... its terrorism in a sense.

I believe those detonating the mines are russian or lpr/dpr soldiers. Both sides are using it.

Blimey, the old " Green Parrots." They used to scatter copies of these around our airfields during Air Raid Exercises back in cold war 1 days.

Bro what? These videos are literally from the Donetsk.. The Ukrainians are literally launching them over to the separatist city of Donetsk and surrounding area... the first video is literally of a DPR citizen throwing a tire at them to blow them up, They have no fragmentation, just high explosives meant to blow your foot off etc. This is literally a classic example of: punch someone, then have the audacity to claim they punched you while you didn't hit them at all.
