Shaving is the removal of hair, by using a razor or any other kind of bladed implement, to slice it down to the level of the skin. Shaving is most commonly practiced by men to remove their facial hair and by women to remove their leg and underarm hair. A man is called clean-shaven if he has had his beard entirely removed.
Both men and women sometimes shave their undercheek hair, chest hair, abdominal hair, leg hair, underarm hair, pubic hair or any other bodily hair. Head shaving is much more common among men. It is often associated with religious practice, the armed forces and some competitive sports such as swimming, running and extreme sports

Razor burn is an irritation of the skin caused by using a blunt blade or not using proper technique. It appears as a mild rash 2--4 minutes after shaving (once hair starts to grow through sealed skin) and usually disappears after a few hours to a few days, depending on severity. In severe cases, razor burn can also be accompanied by razor bumps, where the area around shaved hairs get raised red welts or infected pustules. A rash at the time of shaving is usually a sign of lack of lubrication. Razor burn is a common problem, especially among those who shave coarse hairs on areas with sensitive skin like the bikini line, pubic hair, underarms, chest, and beard. The condition can be caused by shaving too closely, shaving with a blunt blade, dry shaving, applying too much pressure when shaving, shaving too quickly or roughly, or shaving against the grain.
Ways to prevent razor burn include keeping the skin moist, using a shaving brush and lather, using a moisturizing shaving gel, shaving in the direction of the hair growth, resisting the urge to shave too closely, applying minimal pressure, avoiding scratching or irritation after shaving, avoiding irritating products on the shaved area (colognes, perfumes, etc.) and using an aftershave cream with aloe vera or other emollients. Also, it is good to prepare the skin for shaving by cleansing the area to be shaved with a wash containing salicylic acid, to facilitate the removal of oils and dead skin.[citation needed] Putting a warm, wet cloth on one's skin helps as well, by softening hairs. This can also be done by using pre-shave oil before the application of shaving cream. One other technique involves exfoliating the skin before and after shaving, using various exfoliating products, included but not limited to, mitts and luffa. This process removes dead skin cells, reducing the potential for ingrown hairs and allowing the razor to glide across the skin smoothly decreasing the risk of the razor snagging or grabbing causing razor burn.

Yep. I switched to a disposable 1 blade a while back and that did the trick. Expensive multi-blades are all marketing. Every year they add a blade. Just more razor burn.

My skin on my neck is so sensitive, the thought ot going against the grain makes me shiver lol

wow I never even thought that the amount of blades makes it worse! I always thought the more blades the better 0.o

Regular exfoliation is also really important, I have found. It prevents hairs from getting trapped under the first layer of your skin, your epidermis, when the hairs begin to grow back after shaving, thus not giving you folliculitis. A mechanical type of exfoliant/scrub (tiny beads suspended in shower-gel or lotion) has proven to be the best.

My skin is sensitive so I also can't shave everyday - I have to wait at least 4 days but my hair regrowth is really fine though. And I've heard that keeping your blades dry after shaving (as in, don't let them stay in the shower where they'll stay wet) helps your blades last longer.

Something I have learned also from years of shaving is using hot water on my legs to soften the hair. After I do that I use a loofa sponge to get the dead skin cells and then I use a conditioner as a shaving gel. I never have thought to use oils. Will have to try that. Thanks! =]

I used to suffer really badly from razor rash on my legs when I used to use disposables, but once I bought a decent gillette razor the problem went away. It's interesting that you had the opposite reaction. Goes to show how brilliantly different we all are. Also great tip with using oil instead of shaving gel. My boyfriend began using a shaving oil (I forget what it's called now) about a year ago instead of his normal shaving gel and hasnt had any razor rash since either!

Trust me Wayne, this video isn't only for men. No one talks about how women grow beards and have razor burns AND have ingrown hair on their face. But many many do. It's all the same.

Very interesting, I'm glad you mentioned that its NOT a sin to go against the grain, as I always Finnish my shave of that way, and it feels so much smoother than with the grain.

THANK YOU!!! just recently i shaved my legs in a rush and got the worst and most itchy razor bumps ever! it lasted for THREE DAYS :(( thanks to you, i now know what caused it! being all hectic i actually went over the same area about 6 times REALLY fast. i won't do it anymore and will remember to exfoliate prior! :)

I think soaking the hair in hot water, using hair conditioner and not shaving too fast, shaving slow makes razor burn less

Problem solved: buy a DE safety razor. They are much sharper and the blades are only cents each. you can buy 100 blades for $14 - plus they are heaps cooler then disposable shavers.

Curly hair grows back through the follicle at an angle and pokes the skin irritating it. Also, super coarse hair also busts through the tiny follicle irritating it as it grows as well. Those two factors should be considered by those who suffer. I have battled these bumps and/or rashing a day or 2 after shaving as well. I stopped shaving against the grain on my neck or head. I stopped shaving my chest decades ago. Too much pain to look purdy ;-)

Used to get such bad irritation from my gillete proglide. Started using a de safety razor loaded with gillete platinum and I have no irritation at all after shaving

Good bit about the number of blades. Never thought about it that way.

I hope you don't mind if I respond but I just solved this problem for myself after I had some trouble with that. I use a body scrub and exfoliated my skin before applying shaving cream. Then I use a new (or pretty new) razor and shave the direction of the hair first. Then (this applies more to the bikini area) hold the skin taut and shave in the opposite direction. The less strokes you need the less chance of irritation. Then apply Bikini Zone. It's AMAZING for irritation and redness.

I think you just saved my life x3
Also if you have an hydrating anti-irritation shaving cream, you can let it on your skin for 1-2 minutes after shaving to calm down the burn.

Been using an electric razor for years. Bought an DE razor Feather ASD2, porasso pre shave, van de Hagen luxury soap, and an after shave.“ STOP USING CAN SHAVING CREAM ... BAD FOR YOUR SKIN. SOAP IN A TUBE OR SHAVE SOAP IS BEST.” Got a really great shave from this razor. Can’t wait till my next.
