This was much needed advice!! Being in the Army and having super sensitive skin has been a real hassle. I always was told to shave against the grain and other horrible tips to get a closer shave, but always ended up with major irritation and ingrown hairs. Doing these simple techniques not only have saved my face, but also given me the smoothest shaves I’ve ever had!

I have thick hair and sensitive skin. The best way to get rid of irritation and bumps for me was ditching the stupid cartridge razors and use a DE razor, my merker 34 c and a feather blade. Changed everything. Short light strokes with a oil and thick lather. Also you can shave against the grain no problem if you’re careful. It’s more often than not that you’re using a poor technique that causes irritation

Shaving in the shower is the best thing you can do. Doesn't matter what type of razor you use as long as it's sharp. The cream, foam or gel doesn't matter either. Heck you can use soap or shampoo. I've been shaving 35 years. 15 of those I've been shaving my head as well.

I love the clean shaven look much more than rocking a beard. But I don’t even risk shaving with an actual razor anymore because of how bad my irritation gets. It’s only ever on my neck around my Adams apple. Nothing ruins my mood for a few days more than the burning/itching sensation and bumps & rash I get. It sucks. I’m joining the army so am gonna have to give it another shot. Going for a 2-blade safety razor and witch hazel for after shave. Praying that works

Also..my barber once told me your diet determines the aftermath of post shave/cuts as well. Oil and greasy foods leads to skin irritation and inflammation..

Switch to a safety razor and don't look back. Some good mild razors for beginners are the Edwin Jagger DE89, Merkur 34c and the vintage Gillette Super Speed and Tech, also the GSC Sumatra. All of these razors offer a mild shave suitable for the novice.
