Stranger Things: The Complete History of Bob Newby | Horror History

Bob Newby is the tech wiz and boyfriend of Joyce Byers in 1984, but his big connections to Stephen King's stories may be his most interesting trait!

Bob Newby, also known as Bob the Brain, is the former Hawkins High nerd turned RadioShack manager and technological hero who appeared in the second season of Stranger Things. Although it is rarely explored, Bob's childhood years may be the most important aspect of his character.

Bob is written as a huge homage to the universe of Stephen King, from his upbringing in Maine, to his seeming ability to "shine", to his encounter with a nightmare inducing clown character and more -- Bob seems to almost be some kind of Stephen King crossover.

In this episode of Horror History, I'll be analyzing the entire known history of Bob Newby, from his early childhood, to his school years, to the man whose expertise saved many lives from dangerous creatures like The Demodogs and the Mindflayer. I will not only analyze his apparent Stephen King connections, but also what makes him the selfless superhero of Season 2 and how he overcame his "loser" status to become a figure that will be remembered and honored for years to come.

For this analysis, I'll only be considering the canon material, in this case: the web series Stranger Things and the Stranger Things comics.

I remember strongly thinking Bob was a double agent for either the shady Hawkins lab or the upside-down especially in that car scene where he encourages Will to confront his nightmare. The editing while he's telling his story made me think it even more, because confronting the flayer was neVer gonna end well for Will, maybe he was encouraging it so Will would be possessed! I was so certain!!

Discovered recently that Bruce Campbell from Evil Dead said in an interview that without Stephen King, there would be no Evil Dead because Bruce said nobody would give our movie a watch because it was a independent horror movie and King had a friend who worked on the film, he wrote to King and he said he will watch it. Then wrote in a magazine that he enjoyed the movie and the horror, this helped promote the film tremendously.

Originally, season 2 Stranger Things was going to take place about 10 years after the events of season 1, making it take place in the early 90s. In addition, they were gonna have possessed Will (older version of him) be the one to kill Bob.
