These things are indestructible. We ran 3 towers from 1997-1998 to 2013 and never had a single problem apart from a couple of failing tape drives and replacement fans. I still have them waiting for a bit of inspiration :) The plastic feet underneath crumbled to bits tho.. I just binned the covers and plastic parts. There's a realtime clock chip with a battery inside and the battery is dead by now but I think you can still source them fairly easily.

Did you get the system installed in the end? If not, let me know, I can help with a full IRIX distro, either CDs or a disk with an OS setup ready to use. I'm away just now but I could sort something in May or June.

Btw, there is supposed to be a proper metal fold-out side panel covering the internal area, the blue panel is not normally the only thing covering that side of the system.

Did you obtain some sleds?

NOTE: if you ever decide to upgrade the RAM, please be aware that DIMM modules larger than 128MB will only work with CPUs which are at least 250MHz. And IIRC always use the outer memory slots first.

I wonder if like you could get a chinese place to remake a bunch of the trays? Like 3 or 400 of them?
