German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will deliver a government statement on the European Council summit on October 20 and 21. The European Council will discuss Russia's war in Ukraine, the state of energy prices and security of supply, economic issues, as well as foreign relations.

I didn't like that PV was mentioned for replacing gas. PV cannot replace gas in general. This is because PV is very very weak in winter, during peak demand. Also most gas plants (in countries, that did not shut down their nuclear plants) are "peaker" on demand plants, which is the opposite of any renewable. A lot has been said about renewable investments, but nothing has been said about energy storage investments, which leads me to believe that this is politicians speaking without first asking the engineers. Sounds good, doesn't work.

Alright, I'm actually quite surprised. It addressed almost everything I had on my mind concerning the current situation. My particular bugbear is and was energy independency over the last few years. Being so deeply dependent on Russia among other ruthless governments was always looming in the back of my mind and many other Germans who aren't on political autopilot I imagine. Much better than Scholzes previous wishy washy statements without any clear directions.

You know how Germany could "increase the pressure" on Russia? Leopard 2 tanks. They will be highly effective, and are far more practical for Ukraine than American M1 Abrams, which would present very difficult logistical challenges -- because they ave very large and heavy and consume a great deal of fuel with their gas turbine engines.
