WATCH LIVE German Chancellor Scholz and French President Macron speak after EU crisis summit

EU leaders are meeting at the Versailles Palace in France in a crisis summit over the war in Ukraine.

"Russia's war of aggression constitutes a tectonic shift in European history," a draft of the meeting's final declaration said.

Leaders will discuss "how the EU can live up to its responsibilities in this new reality, protecting our citizens, values, democracies, and our European model."

Diplomats said that they would discuss ways to boost Europe's self-reliance, especially in the field of energy. The EU imports about 40% of its natural gas from Russia.

For many years Poles had warned Germany and the EU that Putin would use Europe's dependence on gas and oil to attack smaller countries, but Western politicians laughed at us, said we were Russophobes. Putin has many politicians from the EU and Germany in his pocket. Nothing has changed since World War II, business more important than human life.

Germany -- your government has been hiding from spending money on defense --- depending on the Americans to rebuild Germany. Relying on Americans to defend your own homeland.
