Why Brian Cox wasn't chosen as the successor to Sagan in the public zeitgeist, but Tyson instead is beyond me. Brian NEVER talks down about people not knowing shit, he's just excited to be able to teach you something

It's amazing how Brian can make his watch jump from wrist to wrist.

The best way I've heard someone explain our search for alien life is, imagine if you're looking for fish in the ocean and you fill up one cup with ocean water and say we don't see any signs of fish 🥛🐠

Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying. - Arthur C. Clarke

The reason we can’t detect alien life is that light travels too slow, and we are only able to observe our own galaxy.

I swear. It requires more faith to believe in evolution from single cell organisms than intelligent design. Just mind bending.

I nominate Brian Cox as the next Dr Who

He's making a strong case here. If it took a third of the age of the universe to generate life as sentient as humans on Earth, then it's not that we're "alone" in terms of life in the universe... it's more likely that we're among the first generation of living things, and the vast majority of life elsewhere in the universe isn't at a stage where it has the desire or ability to interact with us. Perhaps 20 billion years from now, this kind of sentient life will have evolved in so many places that those civilizations will start finding each other across the vastness of space, but there's just not enough of it now relative to the distance it would take to bridge that divide in the present. We're likely in a stage of the universe's development where life is still relatively rare and extremely spread out... so spread out that even if there are civilizations _more_ advanced than ours, they still haven't managed to establish a link to the next nearest planet harboring a similar type of life.

Is the universe expanding the same in all directions? Man I wish I could have a conversation with Brian cox

We are so rare we don't even realize it.

If humans are the most advanced life in the visual universe, them I feel sorry for the universe.

He’s right… that is a really long time as far as intelligent life goes.. never seen it broken down like that

Even with super telescopes and listening devices... we only been looking out there 50 years.. thats 50 out of 13 BILLION years.... so there could be millions of civilizations in our milkyway who are more than 1000 lightyears away, some are long gone, some are not evolved and some are way ahead... but we wont know before the year 3023. Distances are so enourmous!! Out first radio signal sent into space was in 1962, so it only traveled 61 lightyears and it probably spread out so much that nobody will ever hear it.

What if they just didn’t build radios? We think just because we built radios, that everyone has to

It could also be that they’re beyond radio waves altogether, also our radio waves have only gone about 100 light years from Earth. Which means that anything further than 50 light years away hasn’t had enough time for the response to get back us and anything further than 100 Light years has not even heard us yet. There’s probably 100-10, 000 civilizations throughout the Milky Way galaxy. And probably upwards of 10M-10B in the Universe.

We also got lucky with accessibility to resources. Very presumptive that making computers are easy for an intelligent species.

Gotta take into account that a planet has to the right settings to allow growth. .if I understand some planets have oceans that has life In . But doesn't have the right settings to replicate earth growth
