Is Halong Bay Overrated? (Part 2) #shorts

Halong Bay is one of the most visited spots in Vietnam but unfortunately we felt the cruise tour is a bit overrated. The natural beauty is undeniable. The views are breathtaking but unfortunately the crowds of tourists & boats really take away from the experience. We also felt a bit rushed following a schedule without much flexibility. We did a 1 night 2 day cruise which cost $350 USD, which was a middle-tier package that was discounted. For this high price tag, we feel there are better travel experiences.

When we visited we saw so much plastic in the water which was so shocking. We’re happy to hear from people that in more recent visits the water was clean and we really hope it stays that way. Please take care of our planet and do not leave any waste behind on your travels.

Have you ever felt a popular tourist spot is overrated? What sustainable travel tips would you recommend to fellow travellers?

I also went in March 2023. Water was clean. Cruise wasn't busy and didn't seem over crowded. Loved the experience

This is a very interesting point, because my wife and I are visiting Southeast Asia for the first time from the UK in January; flying into Hanoi. We were looking at the typical Ha Long Bay 2D/1N luxury cruise, have decided to make our way to Cat Ba island and do a day or overnight trip in a far smaller boat getting away from the oppressive crowds for far more serene, relaxing experience as well as being much cheaper!

I am planning a trip in March 2024. Stellar of the seas. Hoping the water will be cleaner than what your video showed. And going weekday, so maybe less crowded? 🤞

I loved Ha Long Bay. Shame about the garbage, but it truly is a special place. I've read lots of negative reports about Viet Nam, but that hasn't been my experience at all. I've been about ten times since 1995. The worst thing I saw was rich young Europeans from my tour bus refusing to give a crippled beggar 20 cents for a bowl of noodles.
