Another reason you might want to stick around for 3.5 for now might be: A lot of Tutorials and Add-ons are made with 3.x in mind. It might take some time before 4.x becomes as widely supported.

Ladies and gentlemen, after waiting for 4.0 for so long we are now finally at the _precipice_ of being able to start waiting for Godot 4.1.

This is a really good explanation about what 4.0-stable means in term of production readiness, and the dynamics of a big open source project!

Thanks a lot :)

I've been a VFX/CG professional for the better part of the last decade, I found Godot to be such a breath of fresh air after Unreal.. its just so simple and easy to use. I was getting nowhere in UE and finally feel like I'm starting to get good at game dev with simple 2D Godot dev

Good advise for sure, I'd like to say the timeline is shorter, I would say that if you're on 3.5.x right now and plan to release within the next 6 months, stick with 3.5.x, but anyone else should consider converting. The earlier in the dev cycle you are, the more sense it makes to already move to Godot 4.0. By the time your game is finished, Godot 4 will have been put through its paces and issues that may be a showstopper for you will have been dealt with.

Also consider that the bulk of development work on Godot takes place on modern PCs, so if you are targeting PC gaming you're less likely to encounter issues then say if you want your game to run on older model phones.

For those who witnessed the time Godot 3.0 was released, they will recognize Godot went through a similar cycle there, with many developers finishing their games in Godot 2.x, Godot 3.0 offering a solid base but with a bunch of edge issues and most things being solved far before developers were finished with their Godot 3 games.

I am subscribed and workin my way through your videos. I used to be Java programmer 25 years ago and stopped work. I want to get back into programming and Godot seems like a really nice retintroduction for me. The industry has changed so much since I last worked and I'm essentially learning from scratch again.

Just wanted to let you know that I really appreciated the reference to Game Ranx's "Before you buy" thumbnails.

Blows my mind I could now, in theory, game dev on the train on my Android phone without so much as a mouse and keyboard. That's not every sensible, but it's cool it's possible.

YES ! Ididn't start doing games at all. Just made some tuto on the 3.etc... I'm an artist really interested by the versatility of the engine, its evolution and especially the possibility to give life to my Art in games. I love to see the evolution of the engine and i cant wait to see what it has to offer !
Thank you very much again for this chanel and your consistancy to give us things to see, about your developping projet, experiments and, of course, your "This week in godot"!
Have a great day!

When we started our game project we went ahead and started on a Godot 4 RC build about 2 months ago. No regrets at all. The improvements are massive, and the engine is amazing. Allowing the use of function expressions (you can pass an inline function as a parameter to another function or set it to a variable) makes code 100x cleaner and easier to maintain. The new 2D tilemap system is also way _way_ better as you only need one now instead of one per layer like before. Too many improvements to list but yeah if you're on 3.x you really should think about moving to 4.

This is so true, Vulcan itself needs a lot of work to be more usable and on the engine also... I still use version 3.5, especially if you work on mobile games. For desktop PC, you can right now start new Godot 4 projects... keep going very usefull Channel...

fun tip. You can move levels by hitting shift and rolling the middle mouse wheel.

I was kind of waiting Godot 4 to try and dive into Godot game dev, I guess there is no better time to start than now

I remember the 3.0 launch, that was when I first found the engine 🥳 Looking forward to 4!

Other than the bugs, I would note a misbehaving inverse cinematic, crushing character scenes created with version 3.5. I haven't tried physics yet because it requires more code conversion work. I hope that in future versions there will be no changes to the scripting language requiring a complete rewrite of the code, as seen in other game engines such as Unity.
I'm just not going to mention updating plugins with foreign code that you need to update. ;)

Hey, we're back with another episode of "Before You Try." That show will give you some straight up gameplay and our first impressions of the latest games releasing. As usual, it's me, Jake Baldino and today we're talking about "Godot Engine 4"

Okay okay I‘ve subscribed. But I must say that I prefer the way Mike (from the gamesfromscratch channel) pronounces Godot: g‘dough instead of god‘oh.

Tried game dev stuff long time ago for fun and school projects. Time to give another try it looks like.

I'm remaking my prototype from 3.4. I've been waiting for godot 4 for some specific features and because I knew I was going to redo from scratch. I am giving myself at least 3 years so godot 4 makes sense to me.
