Oral and Ruth Lowery are making traditional rope with a special twist. They bought their farm in Hebron, Ohio back in 1930. Will all the cows and horses they needed lots of rope so they made it. It was the classic way. It’s how to do it right. Long lengths of hemp twine are twisted and then gathered and twisted again. The twisting is the key because it’s what makes the rope strong. Their record is 85 ropes in one day. The day we visited it poured rain but Oral and Ruth didn’t miss a beat. When you need rope … you need rope. Today, rope making is an endangered craft. It may be old time, old fashioned, traditional or out dated … but it is a skill this a is an important part of our country’s heritage. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1979.
