There have been found ivory tools for twisting rope since paleolithic times, the holes in the tools show an unmistakable twisting pattern of a twisting rope. Crazy how this technique is.

I India, in my ancestral village folks still make this kind of rope from palm and coconut fibre. They are as strong as synthetic ropes.
