AMD Ryzen 7 - All The Generations Tested

In the past few weeks KitGuru has reviewed four AMD Ryzen 9000 CPUs. Then, just as things were calming down, AMD told us about a Windows 11 Update that would - apparently - transform the performance of their new Zen 5 technology.

00:00 Intro
02:07 Background, thoughts and moving targets
03:15 The goal - generational improvements?
03:48 System hardware
05:44 Results
12:16 Closing thoughts / Windows updates

All that benchmarking made us wonder exactly what counts as decent generational uplift. Is 5 percent pathetic? is ten percent OK? or should we demand at lease 20 percent from each and every generation. Our solution was to line up ten different models of AMD Ryzen 7 from the original Zen 1800X right up to the Zen 7 9700X. Spoiler alter, there are graphs ahead.

Be sure to report spam as soon as you see it, we try to remove it ASAP. Also let us know your thoughts - you guys waiting for the new 3D models to launch or have you already bought a new Zen 5 processor, let us know

Just the right amount of info without getting tedious and painful. Nice to see you got hold of a 7700 as well to follow up. Much appreciated 🍻

Great work Leo! One of the rigs I'm still using started with an 1800X and X370 Aorus board, later I dropped in a 5800X3D and its still fulfilling all the gaming needs just fine.

Microsoft seem to be issuing updates every few days atm for windows 11. Hard to keep track of the patches right now

I still have a 5800x3d in a system In a bedroom. It’s still perfectly capable for what I do. Loved that cpu. Waiting on the 9800x3d.

Thanks Leo, appreciate the efforts on this one - some interesting results and informative as always. You ever worked for the BBC? you have that kind of voice

Love that GPU, its the complete opposite of 'subtle' - whatever that work is. That motherboard is clinging on for dear life there.

AMD have really had a nightmare of a launch - the CPUS are not bad at all really but with an OS changing and shifting so much they really should have held fire on the launch til October/November

Sorely needed in those graphs was the 9700x running at an equivalent 140w that we saw the 2700X, 3800X, 5800X, & 7700X all stretch their legs when using. i totally get that zen5 has been configured by default to use less power but honestly it just seems like a knee jerk reaction to the hysteria over zen4 95c default thermal limit. everyone went nuts that they ran hot and now they're losing their minds that the new ones run slow. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS PEOPLE SO LEO CAN GIVE US GOOD DATA! would love to see what zen5 can do with 140w for a real apples to apples.

As someone still using a 2700x, I really appreciate this testing! ❤

I'd be interested in the X870 boards if the companies would put the debug LEDs back on non-$400+ mobos. bastards.

24H2 was scheduled to be released in early July, but M$ pulled the plug for whatever reason it seems. That's not AMD's fault.

So basically at the same power usage Zen 5 is a decent generational uplift. And those calling Zen 5 a flop are talking out of their behinds.

Gamers should wait for Zen 5 3D v-cache. Workstation users can safely buy Zen 5 and get the expected uplift. (Although that does mean the 9950X really is the only non X3D cpu that makes any sense, workstation tasks usually scale well with cores.)

On a side note I never knew about this channel until this whole Zen 5 madness began and like Level 1 techs this channel actually researched and used their brains what these CPUs are for instead of blindly testing games and declaring failure.

So I guess this whole mess does have one possitive side for me. I found a new reviewer that I can trust to be thorough.

AMD launched this too soon, Microsoft clearly are having a laugh at everyones expense, Intel seem to be hitting a much safer launch time for their upcoming hardware. cleverly, for a change

I enjoy the coverage of Zen from most of the major channels, Leo has been the best, just focused on trying to get answers and figures
