Today’s video shows a partner a technique you can use to stretch the upper trapezius muscle, which can help reduce neck related pain and tightness.

Upper trapezius is often thought to be associated with neck tightness, certain types of neck and shoulder pain and neck-related headaches. As such, interventions designed to treat this muscle are commonly employed in the physical therapy clinic.

One way to address neck tightness and/or pain associated with this muscle is through static stretching. To stretch upper trapezius, stabilize the shoulder blade into depression and sidebend the neck to the opposite direction.

Perform this stretch slowly and gently to avoid straining the neck musculature. Aim for 2-4 repetitions and hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds.
