My husband died from oesophageal cancer. He had trouble swallowing, then suddenly couldn’t swallow even his saliva. In the ED they put the camera down his throat, gave him prednisone for the swelling, reassured him there was no cancer. A couple of weeks later, he was admitted to hospital and after 3 weeks, they found the cancer was on the outside of the oesophagus and inoperable. He had various rounds of chemo and radiotherapy. Seven months later, he was gone. Moral: don’t trust ED doctors, if you’re still suffering, get x-rays, ultrasounds, scans, whatever - endoscopes can only see within, not what’s on the outside! God bless.

I have absolutely everything here except weight loss. Weird 🤷🏼‍♀️. I have trouble with a lot of puréed food, but I’m able to eat most (definitely not all) foods if they’re cut super tiny. I can choke on things like applesauce and mashed potatoes very easily, but had tri-tip a few weeks ago when it was cut into pea sized pieced.
I find all of this odd, because choking on water is very common.
I consider myself very lucky because I have a doctor who won’t give up until he finds the answer. Thank God for truly good doctors

Thanks so much for what was perhaps the clearest explanation I've seen re: symptoms which are suspicious and warrant an endoscopy.

I have burning in my mid abdomen and my hemoglobin was 15 and now is 12 so I have anemia. Is the burning from esophagus or pancreatitis ?

Thank you doctor. I’ve been dealing with symptoms for several months. Down to 88 lbs. I’ve had 3 endoscopy’s. Last one show erosive esophagitis grade D. I was put in the hospital for two days placed on omeprazole twice a day and Pepcid in the evening. Prior to hospitalization I couldn’t swallow even water it was so painful. One strange thing, every time I walked I would get horrendous burping and pass so much gas. My burping got so bad i would often throw up. I quit going shopping because of throwing up in grocery stores. After the two days of hospitalization I thought I was cured. About a month ago the wretching and burping started again. I can eat now finally but only have gained about two pounds. Your discussion was very informative. I have some great doctors thankfully.

Hello, my name is Trish and I’ll be turning 38 at 4:20am when I’m asleep tonight. So, since the early winter last year (2022) I’ve found myself having trouble swallowing certain foods like bread, pretzels, chips, toast, and a few other foods. I have to take rather large sips of water in order for my food to go down my throat and often times I get really bad upper back pain where my spine is as it goes down my throat. Sometimes I have trouble swallowing anything for a few moments as if I completely forgot how to swallow which then sets off a panic attack. About 12 years ago I had severe internal bleeding from my esophagus which had to be cauterized. I had a few biopsies from my stomach which showed H. Pylori. I often get acid reflux and heartburn so bad that it actually comes out of my nose when I’m sleeping. Taking some tums does calm it down for a little bit but I have to keep taking them practically all day. Also, if I eat chocolate at night it happens to me too in my sleep. Should I be concerned about it? I was at one point a good 130lbs and now I’m down to 90lbs thinking that I lost all my weight from a medication. If you doctor could please put in your input in this, I’d highly appreciate you! Thank you!

Hi Dr Donovan, thanks for this video. I have been having some odd symptoms lately which are that I feel like I have a lump in my throat just below the Adam's apple area which may or may not be accompanied with a feeling of tightness in my throat when swallowing saliva, but no difficulty in eating any foods, hard crusty French bread and meats are fine. I do find I get this sort of symptom an hour or two after eating mostly the evening meal and particularly with very fatty/processed oil rich foods like a fish and chippy. And this is apparently worse if I have had a few drinks the night before, as I'm feeling now. I have an appointment with my GP next week Wed, and have to say its a bit concerning. Could this be anything liver related as I've periodically had a slight pain there over the last few years? Oh and I don't really have any of the burnt sensations of reflux, assuming that is always associated with burning sensations....

I've had chronic gerd symptoms for months now, constantly in pain and discomfort, prescribed meds doing nothibg and syptoms getting worse, last few days been feeling lightheaded and constantly dehydrated aswel, only just been referred to gastro specialists so I could be waiting months again. Been told I'm not seen as a priority because I'm only 33 and they don't think it's something serious. I hope for my kids sake it's not esophageal cancer because I'd have no chance to catch it early the way the doctors in my surgery do things

I have been having worst heartburn i have ever had recently despite being on ppi's. Usually if i take my ppi my symptoms are fine. First started having noticeable symptoms 3 years ago. I had an endoscopy a little over 2 years ago no signs of esophagitis or anything wrong... Could this disease develop in the last 2 years like that?
