The answer can also be 80% if all the students who play the violin also play the piano.

I'm a high school math teacher and this word problem is faulty; those 70% could play another instrument besides the piano or violin. The question should be written as, "what percent of the class do not play either the piano or the violin"; as the question is written the answer cannot actually be determined.

Better version:
In a class of 30 students, 10% of the students play the piano, and 1/5 of the students play the violin. 3 students can play both.
How many students cannot play an instrument?
10% of 30 people = 3 people
1/5 of 30 people = 6 people
3 people (pianists) + 6 people (violinists) - 3 people (both) = 6 people.
30 people - 6 people = 24 people.
