I have gotten such an awesome education in the past 6 hours since my Christmas All-In-One debacle. I still can't believe that thing only worked for 6 hours.... Thank you, you're really good at this.

Thank you for this. I’m 57 and had separates for my record collection before I donated it to my younger brother, and I converted to cd’s.
That was 20 years ago and I need to get up to speed on what’s new.
I’m on a budget so this information is essential for me before I commit myself to buying and make a mistake.

I watched this and over the next week spent the whole time gathering all these parts, feels good returning knowing I’ve got everything

1:39 - There is also a third type of turntable drive mechanism: the idler-wheel drive (or rim drive).  This is similar to the belt drive, except there is a rubber idler wheel wedged in between the motor shaft and the inner rim of the platter.  To achieve multiple speeds, the motor shaft has "steps" of various diameter.  There are as many steps on the motor shaft as there are speeds of the platter (two for 33/45 RPM, three for 33/45/78 RPM, and four for 16/33/45/78 RPM).  A mechanism connected to the speed-change lever or dial moves the idler wheel in between the appropriate step on the motor shaft and the inner rim of the platter.

Idler-wheel drive was common on record changers, kiddie record players, and inexpensive stereo systems with integrated turntables.  Very few, if any, turntables made today have idler-wheel drive.

I bought my first turntable in 1989. Still I learned a few things here. Cheers!

You're a legend. I just bought an AT LP60 with TPAB and The Money Store to start off my record collection. Your channel is just as entertaining as it is helpful, thanks :)

I just ordered a Fluance RT85. Looking forward to setting it up and finally get to listen to the new vinyl I have picked up but was unable to play due to not having a turntable.

I just bought the Audio Technica AT-LP120. It'll arrive on Wednesday, so I'll be doing the set up on that evening. Just gonna spend it watching all of your record player set up videos! Thanks so much! By the way do you have any classical LPs in your collection? Just interested, as I almost exclusively collect classical and opera (with musicals and jazz thrown in there from time to time).
