Hey Gold Pony, just wanted to give a shout out, great review. In depth, honest, well thought out and flowed nicely. Great editing and i like your obviously well planned checklist as you went though every feature. Nice job, keep it up.

Another stellar review, Drew! 💯 Once again, you provided us with great commentary. If I was considering a VW Tiguan, I'd definitely want the R-Line equipped model due to the more athletic styling that it boasts. The same goes for the 2021 Atlas Cross Sport that I recently tested out! "R-Line" is just more my taste. Haha! 🤪✌🏽 As always, DriveAndBeDriven will be STAYING GOLD!!! 🌟🙌🏽🌟🙌🏽🌟

Gold Pony, thanks for another great review. I am in the market for a new SUV later this spring. The Tiguan SEL R-Line is at the top of my list. Will definitely test-drive it, among others including the RAV4, the CX-5, Passport and others. Your reviews are very comprehensive and you are head-and-shoulders above other YouTube reviewers. Thanks again!

Excellent review as always.
My only wish is if you could slow down a bit during the review.
Thanks and please keep it coming more cool cars.

You can get one brand new for way under msrp once the 2022s roll out near the end of the year. The good thing about VW is they don’t go too much into a redesign, they still look similar with similar features unlike Toyota and honda who completely redesigns the whole car.

I have the 2019 Tiguan SE FWD in Platinum Gray. I’m very happy with it. But like everyone else says I wouldn’t mind slightly more power off the line from this little beast. It’s great with torque once you get going. It’s smooth & quiet and has good seats and a great Infotainment system that has Apple Car Play & Android Auto. My only small complaint is the front center armrest. I wish I could raise it. It’s too low. The Tiguan SE and up includes a CD Player! Hahaha - the standard stereo isn’t bad at all. The cargo area and side pockets are generous. Also the carpeted door pockets are large and hold 4+ water bottles And my can of Lysol. The glove box is large. The Halogen headlights aren’t my favorite but not a deal breaker. It does have LED DRL’s. The 2nd row bench slides back n forth with 6” adjustability and the seats can recline as well. I have the optional 3rd row which is small but works for small people in shorter distance rides. The available panoramic sunroof is nice. The gas mileage has been really good, actually excellent, on trips too! I drove the competition and I felt the Tiguan was a surprisingly smoother and solid and more expensive feeling drive. I recommend the VW Tiguan.

I just bought a 2021 Tiguan SE. Why do you reviewers say it is "under powered"? It is not under powered...if you put the Tiguan in Sport Mode you have plenty of quick acceleration and power. The problem is you all keep the vehicle in "normal" drive mode. I challenge you to drive it all day in Sport Mode and then tell us it is "under-powered." Also, you can slap it in manual shift and have great power and acceleration.

SEL R Line Premium is arguably one of the best looking SUVs. VW needs to up the HP tho, you are right you'll def get enough power for day to day, but it would be nice to see something a little more punchy

I will wait till the 2022 comes out, to see if they have better deals on the 2021 models. Also, compare the prices on those two years and features.

On the new digital dash can you still reset the service warning or has this become a dealer only reset like some other manufacturers?

Volkswagen is bringing another crossover, and it looks exactly like the Tiguan (except the R-line for now), but smaller and with a revised version of the Jetta's engine. I believe it's called the Taos and it should be available in a couple of months.

There's no excuse for not offering the 228 HP as standard on the Premium R-Line, especially since there's a $7K premium being asked for it. Let's hope they offer a more powerful engine choice for 2022, because in Europe they do.

I am picking up my SE R-Line Black on Friday. The power does bug me, but sport mode with the manual mode is fun.

Good review. A few comments...

Size and Price. If there are two lessons VW has learned over the years about American consumers it's that they prefer VW's to be (a) larger and (b) less expensive than their European counterparts. Thus, the US version of the Passat is both larger and less expensive than its European cousin. VW's largest SUV in Europe, the Touareg, is no longer sold in the US, replaced by the larger, less expensive Atlas that isn't offered in Europe. Likewise, the current generation Jetta is larger than its predecessor and like the Atlas is built in the US and isn't even offered in Germany.

A second generation of the earlier Tiguan is still sold in Europe though it has disappeared in the US. The current American version of the Tiguan is known as the Tiguan Allspace in Europe and considered to be a "midsize" SUV. In the US it's seen as a comparatively large "compact" SUV about 2" longer than next longest compact SUV, the Nissan Rogue, and 3"shorter than the smallest vehicles in the American "midsize" category, the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Ford Edge. The top trim "Allspace" sells in Europe for the equivalent of well over $52, 000. The highest US trim Tiguan (less well equipped) has an MSRP of around $40K.

All of this helps explain the existence of the optional third row seating in the Tiguan. It''s a popular feature in Europe but in the US the Tiguan is the only "compact" SUV that offers the option. And yes, it's very small. But it's worth noting that the 27.9" of default legroom in the Tiguan is actually more than the 27.7" in the Toyota Highlander.
