As an professional avalanche fighter I can tell you these folks made the right move. Had the avalanche got any closer they would want to establish wrist control before looping around the back for a rear-naked choke. It works on tidal waves as well.

All jokes aside, in the event of an avalanche, the WORST thing you can do is run. Please people don’t panic if you ever encounter this. You panic, you run, then you’re dead. What’s ACTUALLY your safest choice during and avalanche, Is to find a point to anchor yourself to and put your back towards the brunt of the avalanche. Don’t hide behind a tree because the avalanche will flatten the tree and you will be crushed. Hide in front of the tree, try to climb a little bit up the base, and then bear hug the tree as the snow hits. It’s going to feel like a car smashing into you but you’ll survive. I survived an avalanche on Everest when I was 22. If you don’t panic you’ll survive.
