At the end of a romantic relationship, or even working one, to what extent should you cut that person out of your life entirely?

Some of us do this immediately. We burn all our bridges.

We scream, yell, and as a matter of pride we declare to ourselves that we’ll never associate with them again. But is that a good way to end things?

I don’t always think so. We can also get punished later on for being too stubborn in life.

In this week’s LOVELife video, I explain exactly when it’s ok to burn a relationship and when you should leave the door open for some kind of future (even if right now that idea sounds too painful…).

being dumped by someone after a long term relationship over text is the worst. it’s like the person didnt really respect you after all.

This is beautifully said. We live in a throw away society where people are always looking for the next best thing. It's a rare and lovely thing to admit something isn't working and the page needs to be turned, rather than ripped out and tossed in the rubbish.
It's so much better for the soul to end with grace.

A guy just disappearing. One of the worst feelings. It stinks.

My serious partner of nearly two years dumped me over the phone. It's like I never really knew them at all.

But why would i want someone who took me for granted and ghosted me without explaining anything, come back to me? There is a reason for that person to become my ex.

What it all comes down to. Is how you treat a person because what you have done to some else will come back to you one day. Have enough respect to talk that person face to face. Not over a text message that's just disrespectful a person deserve that respect.. karma is real because what you think is so worthless one day. You'll find yourself looking for them every day!

It never hurts to end things with class and dignity, regardless of what has happened between you. You don't do it for them, or for the future, it is because you hold yourself to a higher standard of conduct at all times. You don't burn bridges, unless you absolutely must do so.

Please, people, break up in person.
Breaking up over text lefts your partner in not believing that's over.
It's the feeling of agony and pain mixed together, becouse you know you should leave other person alone, but you don't have a good proof that you should, so you just keep texting, feeling confused and trying to get the person back. No text in the world could replace voice and meeting in person.
It couses s lot of problems with mental health becouase you didn't break up, you just keep the person hanging and confused all the time and that person can't continue.
I know it's hard to break up in person, but if you had some beautiful times with your other half, give them respect like that.

My exes burned their bridges with me by cheating on me and betraying my trust and faith in them. They suck, and I would never want them in my life again I any capacity.

My boyfriend ghosted me for almost a month. At first I thought he was just busy with work (he is really busy). But then I could see he was reading my messages, but not responding (I only messaged once a week, because I thought he needed space). Finally, I had enough, and dumped him. With polite strength, I told him how his behaviour affected me, that I wish he had more courage, and that I have higher expectations. I wished him well, and ended the relationship. Of course, THEN he responds. But the damage had been done.

35 year old men should not be ghosting their partners (we were together just over a year). Put on your big boy pants and have that difficult conversation, or you risk losing out on any future with that person. I have totally lost any interest in seeing him again, because I have no respect for him.

I don't mind a text message break up if the person has extreme anxiety or fears that their partner could potentially become abusive.

Very true. You want to leave with style, class and dignity. Specially if you loved, or still love that person.

When you dump me by text I can assure you that I will not be available later when I had nothing but respect for you.

It's always a good idea to live on good terms

I just was recently text dump with someone I cared for. It just really shows how much they cared for you. Sure they might have had bad past breakups but doesn’t mean you are like them we’re all diff. It hurts Bc you know you will never see them again.

That is manipulative, Matthew. You don't have to burn bridges but this mentality of "i might need them someday" is very opportunistic

Break up is always unfair because it doesn't happen by mutual decision as what ex-couples often told you because in reality the other party is still in love but the other has already fallen for someone else.

I totally agree... my ex and I broke up with an mutual decision that things at the time weren't going to work out. Mainly due to external factors like me going to college and him trying to move up in his career... We both agreed that in the future whether we get back together or not will still be there for each other as friends. There was no bad blood in their relationship and it ended on good terms with an in person talk.

Yeah, the worst is definitely what happened two weeks ago. We were completely fine, had a small argument, and then he disappeared and never responded to me.

Except when it's needed. My ex did the most cowardly thing and just broke up with me without explanation and by blocking me, because I guess he just didnt want to give me the time of day to explain and got bored of me. This two days after I saw him and everything was completely fine between us. Therefore, there is not point in keeping low quality, cowardly and immature individuals in my life.
