Film Theory: Titanic is about Time Travel... No REALLY!

Titanic is a movie that has stood the test of time... and has one of the BIGGEST unanswered questions of any movie. No, I don't mean could they both fit on the door if Rose had just moved over a little. I mean the question is Jack a time traveler sent to make sure the Titanic sinks? Yes, that age old question. Well Theorists, today we are going to answer that once and for all!

I love how this went to talking about Titanic, Jack being a Time Traveler, and an alternate history lesson about World War One.

So, I was thinking about this movie recently; and while I do wish Jack and Rose could have lived happily ever after, I think Jack's death was necessary. Not for Rose, but for the audience. As time goes on, the disaster becomes more and more just a footnote in history, detached from the actual trauma of the event. We can look back at the reports of the sinking, and all the death, and realize how horrible it must have been; but it is still just numbers to us. By the time the movie came out, the Titanic had been at the bottom of the ocean for more than 80 years already. Very few survivors were left alive, and for most people; several generations separated them from the wreck. I think having Jack, the charming co-lead of the movie die, after we spent so much time getting attached to not only his character, but also his growing relationship with Rose; was meant to be the emotional punch necessary to make the wreck feel real to us in the modern world. Seeing their adventures aboard the liner, you really began to root for the couple. If it were any other movie, they likely would have gotten their happy ending. But Cameron wanted us to feel the loss, even a little bit, that the survivors and family of those lost aboard the ship felt; by taking this character from us, just inches from the finish line. In that way, Jack is meant ot be a stand in for everyone who lost their lives in the disaster.

I think it’s very very important to mention that the German navy HAD a reason to sink the Lusitania because there was apparently ammunition and weapons aboard the Lusitania and the Germans basically said “oh that’s a cargo ship carrying stuff to supply our enemies” so the U-Boat sank the Lucy other then that the German Navy (to my knowledge) didn’t sink any other ocean liners on their regular routes carrying paying passengers

When this movie was out in theaters and "My Heart Will Go On" was on infinite replay on every radio station, my local station released a hilarious version of the song where, instead of being interspersed with audio clips from the movie, it was interspersed with audio clips from Airplane. I absolutely loved that version. I wish I could find a copy.

it was actually Leonardo Dicaprio... he travelled back in time to sink the ship so they can hire him to make a movie about it
