Here, we consider that the mechanism of AIDS disease is caused by macrophage destruction rather than CD4 T cell depletion. The Kuroda Lab demonstrated for the first time that destruction of macrophages by the virus, rather than the depletion of CD4 T cells, is indispensable in the pathogenesis of AIDS based on studies using the non-human primate model.
