Catastrophising! How do we stop ourselves imagining, fearing and freaking ourself out about the worst case scenarios? #anxiety #catastrophising #catastrophizing

In this video I’m going to give you three simple thoughts we can use in those moments when we find ourself fixating on the potential disasters on the horizon to mitigate any anxiety and get control of our responses.

Catastrophising is the word we might use to describe the habit our mind sometimes gets locked into of predicting the worst case scenarios.
It might apply to everyday things like what might go wrong at work tomorrow, or it might be more about the big picture stuff like war and disease.
It might be fears about our own safety or that of a loved one, but it will usually in some way involve us fixating on the possibility of our greatest fears being realised.

If you have a tendency to catastrophize, as I have, digital media can both trigger the tendency and help you legitimize your worries when your search the worst possible outcomes. It can basically be a catastrophizing machine. I myself need to break my negative dependence on it, it is making me crazy.

I catastrophize everything. I find myself fearing new things and being anxious about it even if it was something I didn't fear just a few months ago. I don't know if I will ever get better and I'm feeling like I'm spiraling out of control day by day. This all started 5 years ago and I feel so helpless and stuck in this loop. I have seen a few therapists over the years and nothing seems to change.

A brilliant video Tim thank you I'm guilty of this my mind seems to cut to a worse case senrio all the times even more so after the past few years like if I have a trip or an event I'm looking forward to my mind keeps leading me to believe for some reason it will not happen. One of the best thing I've done is cut out the news from my life and pay little attention of it

Really glad I came across your ted talk and now your channel. I'm 26 and my anxiety is just spiraling out of control. I'm a catastrophic thinker, and as silly as it sounds I have such a bad time trying to use public bathrooms. Hoping your videos can help me.
